2.8 has more torque, and a tiny bit heavier. They're basically the same, I say go with what feels right to you. Take them both out for a test drive, and see which one you like best.

Which model are you looking at, the E36 (325 vs 328) or the E46 (323 vs 328)

Both are the same insofar as 'modding' them, tons of stuff out there for all 3 series cars. Lots of other factors to consider though, the year, # of miles, current condition, etc etc..

If they were even on all that, go with the 328, a lil more torque, and hp, a little more weight, nothing that's going to be noticible to you under daily driving conditions (weight wise at least).

Either way you'll have a great inline 6 engine to work with. [:D]

it's between a E46 323 and a 328, looking at some that just came off lease, with milage between 22k and 44k
