2000 323ci stall issues

Hi all -

One of the cars I own is a 2000 323ci. I love the car and have not had a problem with it since I bought it.

However, it has a stall issue now. Of course, the mechanic says he can't tell what it is. He says he can replace the fuel pump, which seems like a reasonable thing that would cause this but I thought I'd ask to see what else, if anything has consistently gone wrong on these cars.

Can anyone give some feedback on this?

Thanks so much!

is it a manual or automatic? At which point does the car stall? Can you drive it at all? Does it just stall once you start it or once you try to move? Give me more details. I just had the same issue with my Lexus ES300 which was Automatic. I changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, the Cat Convertor and still the same F**&ing issue. Finally took it to an import strictly shop and they found the problem to be the Computer. $700 later, the car ran like a champ.
But give us more info.

Ok, this one is an automatic. Sometimes when I'm slowing down and turning a corner it will stall and start right back up. Today, the car wouldn't start at all in my garage. I had power but it would not turn over. I had it towed to the shop and my mechanic started it right up of course! So, he checked everything and offered to change the fuel pump but can't guarantee that's what it was. It's so frustrating!

well, just like i said, I went through hell with my ES300 till it was figured out that it was the Computer. However, mind happened in a different fashion. The car will be going 50mph and the next thing, the power will DROP to 5mph. Then it'll start sometimes and then shuts off once you put it in Drive.
I had a Mazda 626 that had THE SAME PROBLEM as you explained. It was an O2 Sensor or also known as the Oxygen Sensor. They're small, but does a lot of things to the car if they're dying. How many miles does this 323ci have? If it's more than 70,000...take a good look at the Oxygen sensor.
Hope this helps.

When its running, how does the engine idle? Does it idle rough or smoothly?

Does your engine misfire or the Check Engine light illuminated?

Can we pick this thread back up? Mine is doing the same thing now. The SES light will come on (will also go out for weeks at a time until the problem reoccurs). I have an automatic. The car will stall out when slowing into a corner (driveway) or stopping at an intersection. When starting on the gas it will hesitate then roughly take off but full power is never there when it's having this "issue". If it does stall, it'll start right back up and usually drive normally.

All due to an O2 sensor?

I found this fix at the end of an older thread in which the car had the same exact issues:

"Checked and adjusted engine idle speed and replaced carbon canistor and the inlet camshaft sensor."

Replaced parts:

FB 12-14-1-438-081 Pulse Generator Camshaft
