I recently purchased a used 2000 323i, which is a wonderful car, except for one problem that is becoming more and more ellusive and difficult to figure out. The problem is:

When I am approaching a stop and the weight of the car shifts from the back to the fornt of the car just before it stops, there is a clunking sound coming from the rear. Also, when I accelorate from a stop it makes the same sound (an muffled "thump"). My BMW technician thought it was a shick bushing and proceeded to replace the rear shocks and mounts...that didn't fix the problem. After road testing it for a couple of days and trying to locate the problem (this included checking the differential, transmission, sway arm and ball joints) he is at a lost.

I would really appreciate any advice or insight from someone who may have encountered this problem before with the e46.

Much appreciation,

Chadwick

I have a 1999 323i and have the same problem. This is the second time the "clunk" has appeared. The first time, it took the dealer mechanics a couple of test drives and several appointments to figure it out. They finally determined it was a flange that needed to be updated. That's all I know. Now my car is out of warranty and I'm going to live with the noise b/c I don't want to spend the money to fix it.

I'd be curious to hear from others with a more complete diagnosis and if this is something that really should be attended to.
