I also have a 2000 BMW 328i and 9 times out of 10 the car shuts off on me in the morning if I leave it in park longer than a minute or so. I did not take it to the dealer so they can charge $150 just to look at it. Once I'm at out of Park, my car runs like a dream. I have heard several reasons for this including, thermostat, idle valve, crank exhaust sensor, and the fuel injector. Can someone please help me narrow it down so I can get it fixed properly.

Thanks!

dang, that sounds pretty bad. what rpm is it running at right b4 it cuts out?

i think my car idles around/ just below 1k rpm- slightly higher on a cold start if the car's been outside overnight. regardless, sounds like u need a good mechanic that doesn't rip u off just to diagnose problems. see if anyone here in the dallas area can give u a referral.

Thanks for responding guys!

I have had the car for about a month now. Yes, in Dallas it can get cold and so far when it's below 45ish outside my car will shut off, if I leave it in park, within seconds. It has not shut off while in drive or when at a stop light. Once my temperature needle get's to the first hash mark I can then put it in park and it will not shut off. So yes, this happens only in the morning, but once in drive and the car has a chance to warm up, it's fine.

I bought the car a month ago with 89,500 miles, now it's around 91,400. So far that's the only issue I have had with it. (It drives so dam good!) I know a real good mechanic but he's more of a domestic specialist. What could it be?

Detrich: During cold morning starts the rpm is right under 1.

Tom: Not sure what you mean by rough, but before the car shuts off, the rpm will just dip down then up once or twice before shutting off.

Now when I start the car I will let it warm up for about 20 secs and then drive off. A couple times while in drive it would idle a little rough if I was at a stop light before the temperature needle got out of the blue area.

on a cold am start the rpm should be above 1k. normal warm idle should be just under 1k. could be the idle setting and/ or fuel pump. maybe not enough fuel is getting to the engine and it's conking out.

Unforturnately this is a problem with the M52tu engine...I have been thru numerous parts trying to correct this very problem...normally when it is very cold or when I get a bad batch of fuel. Changing the "O2 sensor" did not help as well as changing out the "Cam-Shaft Sensor" and various other parts..I have a list somewhere back in Germany of what was exactly changed out.....anyway BMW has not come up with a perfect fix for the problem and has basically "moved on" when it comes to doing anymore research to come up with a solution. It doesnt affect the car once it is warmed up and it doesnt happen as often in the summer months. It can be an inconvinience but the engine is generally fine and runs like a charm once warmed up......

Adrean8j and Wallaby thank you for your latest response. It puts my mind to rest knowing there is nothing major going on. What should I look for or keep in mind to make sure it's just a inconvinience and not anything major on the horizon. I may try to clean the idle valve if it's not too hard to find.

Adrean8, it must be nice living in Germany and having the autobahn at your disposal. The traffic really sucks in Dallas!

Yeah Jackson..it would be nice if I wasnt in the middle of western Iraq right now...LOL..but that is the price I pay for wanting to make the big-bucks(former military, but now a contractor...not Blackwater..LOL)

There isn't much you can do...make sure you put in the highest octane fuel...and one other thing that may seem small but does make a difference. Make sure you gas cap is put on correctly and tight. Something about the pressure levels inside the tank will make the car run rough at start up sometimes...i dont know the exact science behind that (Big Daddy? or anyone else?) but it has caused a problem before.

Will do.....thanks again for the advice......and I would imagine you don't have to worry about paying taxes either where your at, talking about reward over risk.....

All --let me know if I should post another thread to have the following questions answered;

1.) Does everyone take their car to the BMW dealership to get the inspection I and II done, no matter what the year of the car is or how many miles is on it?

2.) How many miles should you expect to get out of your BMW if well taken care of?

As a first time owner but long time fan of the Bavarien Motor Works, I just want to get as much knowledge as I can for the good of my ownership.

Ditto to what Big Daddy said...but in any case I will give my own answers

1. Most of us on here do, because the dealers have all the proper tools for the most part and the work is guarantee'd. I myself use BMW and my tuner (who has done work on everything from Ferraris to building a bi-turbo application for a Z8...seen with my own eyes)

2. I have heard of people having 200k plus on their bimmers...but check around the forum or use the search function and you should be able to find out...I currently have around 130k and the engine is still running strong except for the aforementioned cold start issue)
