i've only had my car for a short time and i'm very satisfied with it, (even though i had a very minor engine problem) but seeing how my BMW knowledge is limited i've been wondering..

what problems should i look out for in the future?
what can i do to prevent future problems?
just how reliable are 2001 3-series?

They're fine. Nothing special about them. Stuff that goes wrong goes wrong with all E46 3 series. The 2001 didn't have any special problems. Just watch out for teh power windows, moonroof, and make sure your fluids all have adequate quantities.

There was a recall on the oil sensor light on 2001 E46. Yu may find the yellow low oil light come on and when you check the oil the levels are correct. This is something which is covered uder a recall.
I had a radiator switch go bad. That is it and I have 85K on my 2001, 330i.
One other issue is the boy racers really like to see what your car will do!

I too had to have a new transmission put into my 2000 323i because my reverse gear stopped working. Had 3 (or maybe 4, i cant remember) window regulators replaced, and will probably have to replace something mechanical in the sunroof also due to malfunction. The car has been a good car overall, but it seems like every time I fix one thing, something else minor is on the fritz...
