How do you like it?
Is it as good as a recent Lexus or Acura nav system?
Is the database of Point of Interest (restaurants, gas stations, shopping etc.) very complete nationwide? Does it display phone numbers to the POIs?
Is it quick to calculate and display a new route if you ignore or miss it's suggested turns?

The system is pretty good, but has flaws like all the others. The Lexus system is supposed to be the benchmark, but just like the BMW system it doesn't seem to be able to give you accurate directions 100% of the time. It will get you to the destination, but the route can be pretty indirect despite of the fact that the map shows all of the streets.

In terms of points of interest, I have been amazed about the detail there, right down to restaurants, ATMs, etc. If you miss a turn, it recalculates instantaneously, but again, sometimes gives you oddly indirect routes.

IMO - BMW should partner with Acura for the nav system. If I had bought a car just for the nav system, I'd be driving a TL without a doubt.

I thought about getting a nav for my bmw but after initially looking at it, I decided against. I spent two days driving a TL with nav, and BMW left me wanting after 5 seconds, so I did't bother after that.

I love my BMW nav system. It is very responsive and has lots of POI info. It is quick to plot new routes and contrary to snowsedan, I have found the routes to be accurate according to the route preference you have selected. Agreed sometimes it does not give a perfect route, but then again I don't expect it to.

One time I asked for a route to a Wendy's in a place I had never been. It was set for "shortest route" and it took me on some back streets and down some dirt roads. I could have gotten there a lot easier had I selected "fastest route".

I just picked up my new 325i on Saturday -- it is awesome! I opted for nav and am glad I did.

One question -- how do you get the icons (i.e. the gas stations, or hotel icons, etc) off of the map after you selected them? I can't seem to clear the map of them. Anyone run into this?

Thanks. By the way, the DVD that came with the car was the 2004-2 version.

I have the NAV system and love it. It's accurate, and totally reassuring when I'm in an unfamiliar area. Even when I know where I'm headed (and how to get there) I occasionally use the NAV system so it will calculate an ETA -- very cool to know exactly when I'll arrive someplace given my speed and traffic conditions.

I do have a question for the board though. Does anyone know of any female German explorers? Since the NAV system has a female voice I'd like to name her ;-)

SnowSedan, thanks for your reply. I also found it helpful to put a lesser known marker on the screen (I like "city hall"). I am taking my car to the dealership today and asked them that specific question -- I'll post when I get their reply.
