Guess I should have investigated what DCB said about cars built after March having BT and Assist capability. Here's my story of my Bluetooth install today.
Ordered the kit from Autovations; got the first generation module, the one that some say to avoid. Also, no BT antenna mounting bracket.
Before going, I pull out the cup holder and coin tray and can see the black bundle of wires that should mean we don't have to dismantle the whole center console.
Had a friend who is a car mechanic helping me. I recommend doing the antenna install first. He removes the rear ashtray.....He looks in and says the antenna is already there; he even reads the part number--a match. I am very puzzled as my dealer showed me a memo from BMW how they don't sanction BT on 04 vert....yet my car has a BT antenna. We pull out the black bundle of wires (actually took some force and confidence that they weren't attached to anything farther forward) and locate the one to connect to the pairing button; since it is only used once, we decide not to mount it. I rummage though my manuals and find the Bluetooth card that my salesman denied existed (I can't believe I didn't find it sooner).
He pulls out the trunk liner. We don't immediately see the Assist module. He keeps digging and finds the radio mounted on the back of the rear seat with another large box behind it. We ponder it and he decides to pull off the whole thing. The one in back is the Assist and it has a BT icon on it and a PK (passkey) number matching the one on the card. We try pairing, but I may do it wrong and continue holding the pairing button down after turning the key to ACC (although I may have done it right, too). So he swaps the Assist for the BT I bought (pulling wires 7, 8--yellow and white with green stripes). I follow the directions, letting go of the pairing button after turning to ACC and within 3 sec, BT Pairing comes on the radio. Can scroll the phone's phonebook within minutes (RAZR V3). Called home; my wife could even hear my friend outside the car.
