Guess I should have investigated what DCB said about cars built after March having BT and Assist capability. Here's my story of my Bluetooth install today.

Ordered the kit from Autovations; got the first generation module, the one that some say to avoid. Also, no BT antenna mounting bracket.

Before going, I pull out the cup holder and coin tray and can see the black bundle of wires that should mean we don't have to dismantle the whole center console.

Had a friend who is a car mechanic helping me. I recommend doing the antenna install first. He removes the rear ashtray.....He looks in and says the antenna is already there; he even reads the part number--a match. I am very puzzled as my dealer showed me a memo from BMW how they don't sanction BT on 04 vert....yet my car has a BT antenna. We pull out the black bundle of wires (actually took some force and confidence that they weren't attached to anything farther forward) and locate the one to connect to the pairing button; since it is only used once, we decide not to mount it. I rummage though my manuals and find the Bluetooth card that my salesman denied existed (I can't believe I didn't find it sooner).

He pulls out the trunk liner. We don't immediately see the Assist module. He keeps digging and finds the radio mounted on the back of the rear seat with another large box behind it. We ponder it and he decides to pull off the whole thing. The one in back is the Assist and it has a BT icon on it and a PK (passkey) number matching the one on the card. We try pairing, but I may do it wrong and continue holding the pairing button down after turning the key to ACC (although I may have done it right, too). So he swaps the Assist for the BT I bought (pulling wires 7, 8--yellow and white with green stripes). I follow the directions, letting go of the pairing button after turning to ACC and within 3 sec, BT Pairing comes on the radio. Can scroll the phone's phonebook within minutes (RAZR V3). Called home; my wife could even hear my friend outside the car.

I only do this as a reply in case I bored you up there.

The module we pulled out has BMW, Motorola and Bluetooth trademarks. Also:
84.11 6952218-01
232925 23
USA 28.04.2004 (this looks like a date--I'm pretty sharp, eh?)

BMW Everest IBUS US
SW: 35 HW: 30
BT: 00E00C535018
PK: 0x0x (this would be a somewhat unique number)
ESN: 146-xxxxxxxx (??electronic serial number??)

It is also much longer than the BT only module.

So:
1. Does anyone know if this should have worked after installing the pairing button?? I have another friend who knows a BMW master mechanic and will probably give him this info and see what he can find out about.

2. HOW CAN BMW NOT KNOW WHAT BMW IS DOING????? WHY DID MY CAR HAVE A BT ANTENNA ALREADY MOUNTED IF MY CAR ISN'T BT APPROVED??

3. For DCB, my car was built in April or May. If yours was also after March, there's a good chance you already have the antenna and the same module (which was a real pain to get to). I just don't remember how I tried to get the car in pairing mode. I think I let go at least once, but can't be 100% sure.

4. I need to figure out if I can voice dial through the system (I don't have Nav); I can only hope I didn't have this capability with the module I removed and replaced with generation 1.

Just press and hold the bottom button on the steering wheel. When you hear the beep, say "Help" and it will respond with available options.

You can also download the voice command manual.

Found the manual on line. Everything works well with voice commands. Totally bogus that BMW doesn't support this officially.

One question: How can I get the ULF module to update my phonebook from the phone? I programmed in a new number and it doesn't seem to be on the display when I scroll, like it took the phone book at initial pairing and that's it. Do I have to repair?

What did your assist module look like CaveDweller? BT icon??
Bry, how about you?

My Assist module did not have a BT icon on it and it was definitely missing the BT antenna connection. You could see where it would have gone, but there was tape over the hole.

My current phone is also not 100% compatible so the phonebook doesnt xfer. I should have a RAZR in a couple of days (ordered it yesterday) so I'll play with adding numbers to it.

Wow, Drkeng... what an ordeal! My car was built in February 2004. The car DID come with a BlueTooth card in the delivery package, but no passkey. The card has a bunch of gibberish on it in a bunch of languages and provides a blank space to affix the passkey sticker from the BlueTooth ULF module. I've since placed my sticker on the card and keep it in the trunk with my maintenance booklet and other delivery materials.

I did not have an antenna pre-installed either. My Assist module did not have a BlueTooth badge on it, so I'm certain it wasn't a BlueTooth capable module (the build-date alone suggests that). Like you, I started with the older 552 module and have since upgraded to a new-ish 3xx module. The 3xx module works a bit better with my RAZR, but I'm still not able to get the "Messages" feature to work. We're supposedly able to view SMS messages on-screen (I have Nav) from the Telephone menu, but when I select "messages" it says "no messages".

Sorry you had such a weird experience. I find it frustrating how BMW USA doesn't have a clue what's coming out of Munich. You'd think the sales force would be better educated on incoming inventory. When I was in the process of buying my car, my salesperson swore up and down that since I ordered the Navigation system, the only way I'd be able to listen to CD's was to buy the trunk-mounted CD changer. I proved him wrong with a touch of the "eject" button mounted on the Nav display -- the display has a motorized mechanism that tilts it down to expose a slot-loading CD player. Needless to say I lost a lot of confidence in the guy's ability to walk me through the features of the car. That's when I joined this board and I've been soooo much better informed since.

Since I don't have nav, was not going to renew Assist anyway and have great functinality with the BT module I installed, I'm happy. Out $500 or whatever, but happy. Part of me wants to swap back and attempt pairing again with the old module, but I proably won't. Especially since it was all buried back behind the radio on the back seat.

My BT card had a 4 digit pass key-I never really looked for it, because my KNOWLEDGABLE salesman also knew so much. He didn't know you could open the top with the key remote either.

My friend's friend who is a BMW Master Mechanic found a memo dated Jan xx, 2005 describing the post March cars w/ BT. I probably inquired 1 week earlier. If the post here about new modules wasn't one day before my scheduled appt to install, I probably could have done some investigating. Andy, who posted instructions, e-mailed me that I might not even have needed the pairng button--that I could pair w/ the key in ACC.

Anyway if anyone out there has a post March 04 coupe/cabrio, you probably have BT with at most the need of a paring button. By the way, I was able to fish out the black bundle of wires without undoing the whole console (with some good tugging) to connect to and just bury it all back under the coin tray.

only those with assist or prem package have bluetooth.

further more I have an 05 325 vert and didnt get assist when I purchased mine. I just purchased the module and it shows telephone now in my nav. I just have to get bluetooth activated and IM set!
