I just purchased my first BMW 2000 323CI its all stock
In second gear at about 4800, 5000 RPM about 45-50mph a vibration starts. It doesnt do it at that speed in any other gear or at that rpm in any other gear including first.
Any idea what this might be.
Thanks
Anthony

Where did you get it? Did it come with all clean history? Symptoms sound to me like your poor babe went thur a car accident! That hurts!

clean car fax original owner no accidents. and Im pretty sure a slight vibration in the top of one specific gear would have nothing to do with an accident. at first I thought motor mount or engine mount but it would prob vibrate in 1st or 3rd also but it doesnt, so maybe a trans prob?

My E30 does that in 4th at certain RPM's the shifter vibrates like crazy. I know their different beasts but I'm just saying I have the same problem with my Getrag 260. Oh well, I have a new tranny on order.

Then it might be caused by one of the following:

Oil low

Bad water pump bearing

Worn chain tensioner

Worn camshaft lobes

Poor oil pressure

If you really want to do it yourself, add this book into your collection.

You can find it in amazon.com

It is only slightly noticable. A passenger may think that it is road conditions. However I notice everything. You can barely hear it or feel it. The sound is almost like a quiet rev limiter. however the rpms do keep climbing with no noticable power loss. And It doesnt really soud like its coming from the engine.
Thanks

When you say it sounds like a rev limiter, I think you mean it is cyclical - kinda on/off or louder/softer in a steady rhythm?

If so, it might just be something resonating. That's tough to locate....

it ended up being the rubber piece that goes between the drive shaft and the tranny. Problem fixxed.
However I installed a B&M short throw and now there is a slight wine comign from the tranny when you put sideways pressure onto the shifter while its in gear, like if your holding onto the shiifter too hard while in gear. is this a problem or is it just because of the different shifter.
