can anyone direct me to a list of horsepower ratings for 3 series bmws over the years..? i have a 1900cc '96 318is 4-door (singapore import), is that a 16 valve M44...?

i've been thinking of upgrading to a 2000 or 2001 318i (which someone told me was about 120hp, same or less than what i have...?). the 2001 318i are also 1900cc, except for a 318ci 2000 coupe i saw which was 2000cc. i like the balance of power and fuel economy with my iS (wouldn't want anything less powerful though), just wondering how the others i've mentioned would compare.

any info much apprec.

The 96 318is had 140 bhp@6000 rpm, 175 Max torque Nm@4500 rpm, Dohc 9.0:1 Compression ratio. In 96 this was an M44 motor and 1800 cc's.

The 2000 318i had 118 bhp@5500 rpm, 180 Max torque Nm@3900 rpm, Sohc, & 9.7:1 Compression ratio.

The 2001 318i had 143 bhp@6000 rpm, 200 Max torque Nm@3900 rpm, Dohc, No comp ratio listed.

All information listed is from "The Complete Book of BMW", by Tony Lewin. I hope it helps.

thanks for that info - that's a huge difference between 2000 and 2001... is it the same for all models in different parts of the world? my iS has 1900cc for example which isn't the 1800 spec you mentioned.

In 96, didn't you have both the 1.9L and the 1.8L? And also in 1995? I know when I was ordering parts for the cooling system, I had to use the month manufactured because the engine varied; and mine is 1995, not even 1996.
