316 and 318 horsepewer differences both 1895cc

A friend has a blue 02 /2001 316i with 1895cc engine and 105 horsepower.
We want to know which are the differences with the 318i since the engines have the same cc.

i see. okay, in the beginning of the E46 line, the 316 was not planned to be built. When demand for a 316 increased and got big enough BMW decided to offer a 316 as well, all though they did not plan to. the engine chosen for this 316 was the one used in the 318 but with reduced power. that´s it.

maybe me or someone can find more information what they did to reduce the 318 power to make it a "316".

Maybe that process is reversible and 316i owners can start enjoying the 318i power. [:)]

it sure is, all you need is to get the 316 engine back to the same status as the 318. but it sounds easier than it might be. for example my 323 has the 2,5 liter engine, similar to the older one used in 325ers. i could gain power up to 192 hp by adding the original intake manifold and motronic stuff. but that is darn expensive.
i wonder if anyone knows what it might take to make a 316 a 318...

316i and 318i

316i = 8 valve / econo software mapping / low octane

318i = 16 valve / econo & sport software mapping ( with adaptive driving for gearbox and DME) / low and high octane (highest preferred)

I am not sure about the E46 318 and the 316 beacsue i have not seen one in our shop.
However the new E90 engine in the 325 and the 330 are both 3.0Litres. The only difference is that one of them is detuned electronically. Why they did this I have no idea.

Yeah - you won't see one in your shop because BMW never imported 4 cylinder E46s to the US.

Actually, that's not true. The 330 also has a three stage variable intake manifold whereas the 325 has a non-variable single stage intake manifold in addition to different software.

Differences

Did anybody get any info on this? The early E46 316i and the 318i use the same engine, the M43B19. I have read that to upgrade the 316i to the 318i that the intake manifold needs to be replaced and possibly the ECU but I cannot get this confirmed.

for the 323 to get up to 325 power all you really need is new software and a Camshaft change...my 523i dyno'd at 170ps back in august..i just got my cams changed last month....it dyno'd at 197ps(and my mechanic says it should be closer to 210-215ps once i get my ABS computer fixed....)
