I have the option to buy either a 98 328i or a 99 323i. They are both about the same price and and have about the same amount of miles. Which one would you guys take?

Thanks in advance!!

Yep, if the milage is the same, get the 328, you get a little bit more HP. Nothing extremely noticible, but when is more hp not better? [:)] Nothing wrong with the 323, 2.5l is a nice 'lil engine.

(I have a 323 btw, I *didn't* do what you're looking to do because I found a 323 with low milage, but couldn't find a 328 the same way, they always had racked up milage on 'em..)

Thanks.

The 328 has about 68K on it and the dealer wants 18K for it. I thought it was a little high, but it does come with a warranty and is BMW certified.

The 323 has about 60K on it and the dealer wants 16K for it. Sounds like a little better deal, but I know it is a smaller engine. I was thinking that the 99 was a new year and I didn't know if the newer 2.5 was closer in horsepower to the older 2.8 or not.

How's the prices sound? I'm having a hell of a time finding anything with a 5 speed.

Thanks
Jared

He has a valid point regarding the 2 thousand dollar difference. I was under the impression that there was a much less significant difference. Sure, it's a relatively small percent of the total purchase cost, in relation to a less expensive car. nonetheless, two grand is two grand. plus you can probably bargain a bit, right? at that rate, you may want to go with the 323...i'm torn.[rolleyes]

What would be a good price for the 328i? Does $16.5k out the door sound good? I love that car and am thinking of calling him today and making an offer. I just don't want ripped off and but it because it was one of the first ones I found.

Thanks

That's sounds a little high. I sold my fully loaded new body 2000 323Ci with 60k for 19k. Is the car a new body style 3?

i would assume it is the new 3 body style seeing as it's posted in the E46 section. the cost of cars really depends on the area you live in. i can get a car for about 5 grand less here in sarasota, FL as opposed to Seattle, WA where i actually live. so 16.5 may not be unreasonable..check www.kbb.com (kelly blue book) usually regulates the cost of used cars. I did post here because I was comparing a 98 to a 99 but now I'm leaning towards the 98 which would be the other forum. Don't know how to move the thread though, probably has to be done by a mod.

Thanks
Jared

A year 1998 3-series is not an E46.

My E46 1999 328i is the first year...even though I received my car in 1998.

If the 328 is not an E46...go with the 323.

go with the body style you like the best. thats all i have to say. i could buy an E36 328i or an E30 M3. I would go for the M3 in a second, because i much prefer the E30. I'll tell you the same thing I was told - do what you want, because if you end up not liking it, you can always resell it. if the hp gain doesn't matter to you, then go for the 323. just remember, you're posting in the E46 section, so you're likely to have a bias =)

If the price difference isn't the big swaying point, then think of what you could do to the 323 with 2k. Thats a nice set of 18's w/ tires and a little money left over to save towards slamming it.. Oh but I digress.. [;)]

Or.. if it already has decent wheels.. 2k in performance parts would probably make you *faster* than the 328.. a Cold Air intake, Exhaust, and Software (Shark Injector) set would be sweet. Those 3 together would range from 1100-1600 depending on what sorta CAI and Exhaust you put on. And possibly gains of 15-25hp with those 3 items, not to mention the limiter being taken off, more torque at lower revs, (blah blah BLAH blah). [:)]

Congrats on the new car. It looks great. Earlier didn't you say it was a CPO car too. If so its an even better deal. I would have made the same decision as you. Just watch out for delamination of the door panels, a problem on many E36 cars.
