323i wont go into reverse

I own a 323i automatic and when i put the car into reverse the car will not go backwards. However, when i put the car into drive it goes forward with no problem. I drive the car hard and have never had a thud or any problems with the automatic transmission. What could it possibly be? COuld it be that i am low on transmission fluid? PLEASE HELP>>>>>>>>>.........................

check you trans fluid, smell it, if it smell burnt and its low, tranny probably took a poop

Yes, an automatic can fail so that one "gear" is missing.

You should be able to find someone to rebuild it for $2K to $3K max.

Find someone who KNOWS BMW transmission models. It's really either a GM or ZF transmission, BMW doesn't actually make their trannies. There were problems with a ZF transmission used in the 7 series. Good, honest transmission shops that knew their stuff could fix that for a few hundred dollars, while the average shop was just doing a complete rebuild.
