--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was getting a brake job and the mechanic noticed that the rear coil spring had separated from its wheel mount. The car is only 5 years old!!

Has anyone had this problem?? It sounds expensive to fix. Car handles OK though.

Not sure what you mean, the "coil spring has seperated from its wheel mount"?
Here is a photo of the rear speing of your car, what has the spring seperated from?

Also I am moving this post to the E46 forum instead of the E30 forum.

Sounds maybe like your mechanic has diagnosed bad RSM's - this can probably give the appearance (And feel) that your shocks are 'loose', every time you hit a bump the car will 'skip' instead of absorb the bump, as the shocks and RSM's are not meeting correctly any more. (Parts 7, 9, and 19 and prolly a few other screws in there from Big D's Pic!)

This is fairly normal for E46 3's with 60k miles or so, or 4-5 years age. (Along with Control arms, and/or arm bushings, and FSM's as well). Depends on how the car was driven, and how many miles it has on it.

If this is the problem - it's not too expensive, I had polyurethane RSM's put in when I redid my suspension, they outlast the OEM RSM part, and are considered an upgrade from the OEM part. I believe it was a little over $100 shipped for a pair of poly RSM's. About an hour or so labor.

Thanks for the reply.
If I remember correctly, it was part 15 above that was broken off and missing so that the coil just sat in place behind the wheel.

What is an RSM?

if part 15 was messed up your spring would be sitting on the road.

Dear Big Daddy

Im using 325i SMG 03 Sport Model. The mechanic in our local authorize dealer inform to me that my coil spring, absober, bushing and anti roll bar kit is fitted with M3 spec. If i want to lower down my car, which i can change to aftermarket spring. What about eibach spring is it good? or you have any other spring that you recommend.

Need your help.. Big daddy.. [headbang]

Thanks
