I know the C230 has a smaller engine but horsepower is similar.
Has anyone test driven both?
The C230 will be around for at least a couple years after the E46 is gone and the C-Class is also getting a revamped interior and a much impoved manual transmission for 2005.

IMO, the C-class is not comparable to the 3-series. You never see a C-Class considered a top performer or great deal; I subscribe to four auto mags and the consensus is the 'low-end' Benz is not comparable to the 3-series or even the Japanese cars in the same class. I think Benz are great cars. If you spend over $60k, they make the best in the world. Just my $0.02.

My wife has a 325i. We both test drove the C230 and the 325i before she made her purchase. Each of agreed that the bimmer was superior. I also test drove the c320 which I like very much, but that takes you up a notch in the $$ dept. I would go with the 325

BMW is, and always will be, a more entertaining drive. The driver-vehicle communication of a BMW is second to none. Mercedes is more about luxury...they give you a smooth, soft, luxurious ride (really pampers you) with pretty stable handling. If you want a driving machine, get a BMW. If you want more luxury and to just be pampered from point A to point B, get a Mercedes.

No comparison!! Trust me...we have been driving Benzes exclusively for years (had 15), and now that we have 3 BMWs...their is no comparison between a 325 and a 230.

The 230 is a cheap, very entry-level Mercedes. The interior feels nothing like a Mercedes "used" to. In fact even the $100,000+ S-Class now feels "plasticky".

The C-Class has been plagued with reliability issues since the new model was released in Summer 2000. If you enjoy visiting the dealer a lot, buy a Mercedes. It has been rumored that Mercedes is even planning to drop their "free scheduled maintenance" in 2005....although it was never free (brakes, rotors, etc...are not covered...unlike BMW :)

I would take my 330cic over any Mercedes!!!! Beware of the 3 pointed Star...it is alluring and bewitching like a drug. It pulls you into it's web of intrigue....and then it strangles you!!!!!!

I haven't sat in the new redesigned C-class yet. But, the older one was vastly inferior to the 3 series. Mercedes' one redeeming feature is that it's supposed to feel more luxurious and give a better ride than the BMW. Well, not with the C-class. It feels really cheap and doesn't ride any better. The C32 AMG does feel luxurious and ride's smoothly, but it's got different leather and trim and special seats which account for the ride smoothness that the regular C's don't.

Still, Mercedes redesigned the interior (and exterior) in large part due to the complaints about how utter crap it was. My parents, who generally don't notice the details, were so horrified with it that they actually suggested I not get it, even though they like the brand and defer car choices to me. I haven't sat in the new one tho so I'll withhold judgment until I do. The new SLK supposedly got a much higher quality interior too. Hopefully MB has heeded JD Power and all the customer complaints and is upping the quality. I, for one, have been bitching endlessly about how cheap our E320 feels. The quality on our 85 500SEL was much, much better.
