325xi winter question

I got my 02 325xi last June. Obviously, I haven't driven this car during winter. My last car was a Honda CR-V and I would say it was pretty good in harsh conditions. What should I expect on my car? How does it handle those icy roads during winter?

Nothing handles ice so drive carefully in that stuff. You will find that your car goes through the snow with ease in anything under 6 inches. After that, the low clearance becomes an issue though it's still a hell of a lot better than the non-AWD cars. I haven't put snow tires on my car during the winter but may since it would probably be unstoppable at that point.

One thing for sure, no car without AWD will be able to hang with you when it's raining. The car is an absolute tiger on a rain-slicked road. Take it to a parking lot and test it out.

Thanks for the tip, snow. I may also put in snow tires this winter to be on the safe side. My experience on rain was awesome. The handle was superb on rain soaked roads. I even think it's better than my CR-V.

Don't make the mistake that many drivers of AWD cars make, and that is driving down hills like they are invincible. Remember, AWD is of little value driving down hills; it's the tires that are important for driving down hills.

Exactly!!! Also, AWD doesn't help you any when braking so when it comes to rear ending people, you are equal with RWD and FWD.

I have a 325xi here in Cleveland, where we get just tons of snow due to the lake.

I have to say, the 325xi beats my old front wheel drive in the snow. Great handling... however, as others have said, you have to be carefull of the confidence awd gives you. Here in cleveland it is mostly 4wd suvs that you'll find stuck in snowdrifts off the road, because they get arrogant and forget that enhanced acceleration does not translate into enhanced braking.

And of course nothing works on ice.

I don't use snow tires, my all seasons work great here.
