On my drive home from work tonight I had the Nav system directing me home -- obviously I know my way home from work, but sometimes I use it for the ETA feature. Anyway, that wonderful female voice issued a command (bear left to follow i280 north) and right after she did that, my information display in the dash (just below the speedo and tacho displaying odometer and temperature) went completely black for about five seconds then flickered back on again.

Has this happened to anyone else? What could the problem have been? All other electronics continued to function normally -- including the Nav, my stereo and headlights. I've heard BMWs suffer from electrical gremlins... now I'm starting to worry. I've only had the car 6 weeks.

I assume you have noticed that the display shows feet (or meters) when you are within 1000 feet of the next turn. The display will change as it counts down until it reaches 0, then return to normal.

Maybe that is what was happening? If you were staring at it and it was completely blank for 5 seconds, that sounds fishy. Or were you glancing at it and maybe saw it when it was blanking to display the next distance?

It's just that what you saw correlates with that distance mode it goes into. Seems related to that maybe.

If it was flickering, forget everything I said and good luck reproducing it.....

bmwrocks... yes I'm aware of the distance countdown. However, when the nav does this countdown (replacing other trip computer info like temp, range, etc.) the odometer info remains. When I glanced down, the entire display was blank. I think I'm going to put that on my list of stuff for the dealer to check when I go in for my first service.
