Everytime I don't drive the car for a day or more and I turn the key the engine has a rough start. It will go to 1000+rpm for the start and then down to 300rpm where it shakes like its going to break unless I hold the key to keep it sparking then it catches and runs. Is there a spark-plug issue here?

your 04 should still be under warranty, so i'd take it into the dealership.

i had a simililar issue with mine 2 years ago. they reporgrammed the chip, and something else and it sorta helped. problem resurfaced but the issue was resolved later. (i can't remember if it was the recall that finally fixed it or not..

i guess i'll have to see how my car behaves this winter. i hate to cold idle, but after the engine issue, i at least let it sit for 15 secs, or until the revs fall below 700 or so..

That's the thing today I started it up and it sputtered at 300-400rpm and caught after a few seconds, maybe it is a fuel issue, I've been buying fuel from a flying J shell station where it's 2.44 for a gallon of premium. I figured the huge station would mean good gas, I guess I'm going to try somewhere else. The car is also 1600miles away from needing its 30k oil change and inspection. Since we don't have Chevron out here I think I'm going to try Sunoco instead. As for the ignition coils recall, they already checked them or replaced them (tech was unclear, so was the statement which said recall on it) back in dec of last year. I guess I'll try a different gas station and mention the coils when it gets brought in for inspection 1.

The thing is when it's warmed up, it starts up perfectly, and the engine performance is excellent.

My car had a similar problem. It would either stall or have very rough idle before catching on cold starts. Took it to dealership and they updated DME with 'SW-44'--software upgrade for this problem. Mine is an 02 325it
