Interesting to note on the BMW NA website that the new 530i with steptronic posts a 6.9 sec 0-60 time whereas the 330i is posted as 7.0
The 530 has a six speed auto tranny vs. the 330i 5 speed, but the 530 is only a hundered or so pounds heavier despite its significant size advantage.
Makes you wonder that maybe this new 5 series is something pretty special after all eh?
what do you think?[scratch]

I was in my friend's 2003 530i (E39 body)...man, that is a sweet car. Such tight handling, while still being soft and comfortable. Engine sounds great too....sounds much bigger than it really is. I always forget why BMW charges such a premium for their cars until I get in one again. [driving]

Oh and to answer your question, I completely agree with frolf. Gearing is a huge deal and I would imagine that the new 5er's Steptronic transmission has shorter gearing and faster shifting.

No my friend, my car, 330i, does 0-60 in 6.5secs while a 530i does it in approx. 7.2secs

It makes sense.. Same engine on both cars but diff. weight. You figure out which one is lighter and do the math ;)

Bmwusa.com figures for 0-60 times:
BMW 330i auto: 7.0 seconds
BMW 530i auto: 6.9 seconds
As we said before, gearing is shorter on the 530i and being a newer automatic transmission, it probably shifts faster, as well.

The 545i with automatic transmission does 0-60 in 5.8 seconds, which is pretty quick. Too bad it looks like it does 0-60 in 10 seconds. [:(]

EDIT: That's probably not true, but the new 5-series isn't as sporty as I would like it to be.

I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again. The new 5 series is GEORGEOUS! [thumb]
With the sport package it has the refined aggressiveness that BMW does so well. C'mon, would you really want one of those ridiculous rear wings like you see on the pocket rockets like the Suburu or Mitshubishi? [:)] [wave]

The new 5-series has accomplished the "nice" factor, but I think it is lacking in the sporty department. It doesn't have the definitive, aggressive, sporty look of the E39 5-series, and the wheel choices for the new 5-series just do not look aggressive or sporty at all. I think the car is lacking a more muscular appearance. Also, maybe it's just me, but the new 7-series and 5-series interiors with the iDrive just do not excite me that much...they are not as traditionally classy and luxury as they used to be.
