5000 RPM with a G35 Coupe Today

I hit 1,000 miles today and decided to push it a little, running up to 5000 RPM. I ran into a guy in a new G35 and I must say I was impressed with the car. We left the parking lot at the same time and it was a very close drive down the road. He has 260 HP and I have 235 HP but it did not seem like a real difference, although I am sure we were both a little conservative dealing with new vehicles. [driving] [driving]

Very good bahnstormer. Us G35C drivers have 55hp over a 330i (45hp over a 330iPP), but we a lot at 3,479lbs, and our first gear isn't so good, so we have to watch out when a 330i pulls up next to us at a light. [burnout]

hp doesn't mean much. factor the car's weight and gearing in. [:)]

Thats true. I think the sedan and 330i were very close in time if I remember right. I was thinking that the coupe would do better than the sedan, given the HP increase 260 v. 280, and whatever else they may have done to it.

This evening, I floored my car several times. I had almost 700 miles while I was doing this...my friend wanted to race me so I was taking it almost to redline quite a few times tonight. I hope I didn't damage the engine. [V]
I'm sure I didn't, though....the engine is probably broken in already.

Hopeing

I took my car to 120 mph the other night. I only have about 700 miles on my car now. The open road just made me want to see what she can do. At 120 I still had mucho pedal to still use. Very smooth. It's almost like you're floating in air at that speed. I do want to get it at least once to 155 at the limit. Just once. Err, maybe twice. [hihi]

Anyhow, I hope I didn't damage the engine since I did it below the recommended break in period. I doubt it though. Assuming the BMW and any other car manufacturer would over estimate break in speeds and mileage.

For the first while I did baby mine. It was delivered to my home with 8 miles on it. At that point I would have not driven it the way I do now, but I have gradually increased the RPM's over the first 1,000 miles.

The only concern I have is that the shifting is not as smooth as I would think it should be. It is alomst like there is a catch that does not prevent shifting, but makes it less smooth.

I have g35 6mt broken-in. I personally raced 330iPP at new hampshire dragway. you are absolutely right about 1st gear and the weight, but when I shifted into the third gear I pulled away and beat him in 1/4 mile. but you right, i would not race 330iPP on the street. their 1st gear is awesome!!! do you think g35 6mt can take on 1999 m3 5mt in 1/4 mile?

Bryan

Hi Bryan,

I agree with you. I thought I was driving my car incorrectly cuz I can NEVER get it to shift smoothly. Does the transmission need to be broken in as well before it gets smoother?

I sit in traffic most of the time so I'm always feeling the jerky shifting. My wife's IS300 is super smooth in all gears but 2nd. Sometimes you can't even tell you're shifting in her car.

Perhaps that's the difference between Japanese cars and German cars??? Not sure since this is my first BMW.

Dekion, I can tell you that no matter what I do, my G35C is not smooth when I shift. I mean, I take the proper steps of lower rpm shifts (3K) and being slow and careful with the clutch during normal driving, but there is still a bit of jerkiness. I have been told that is just the way manual transmission is.
soccer23, the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are so close for the G35C 6MT and E36 M3 5spd that it's really just a driver's race (i.e. managing your engine power perfectly).

Hey Dekion,

I am not sure about the transmission either? I was thinking that I may need the clutch adjusted or something. I guess this could just be the way the car is. The thing about mine is that it is actually smoother when it is cold, cold being relative given that my garage is 110-120 this time of year.
