Anyone change one before?? I have to do it soon and
read in a Chilton that the engine must be jacked up
2" to get it out/in, but Bently book does not mention it.
Besides leaking like a mother, I think th inner tierod is
just about done. Feel every bump on the right wheel,
tough to keep straight, mostly in the rain!!
You guys know your shi#!!!
Thanks again

When the rack was done on my '89 it was up on a lift and no jacking of the engine was done. As you said the Bentley does not mention engine jacking nor does the Haynes. They say to jack up the car and support the car on jack stands. It is a messy job even on a lift so I had it done in an independent BMW shop. The ZF remanufactured unit is not cheap ($615) as you probably found out. To avoid the mess I spent the extra bucks and had it done and its covered by a one year warranty. Total cost? $860.
