When the button is pushed in (and blue) the A/C is on... as long as the air is facing the normal vents. If you have it facing the windshield only it automatically disengages the A/C. At least that's how it is on my car...

burly, you have some burnt out lights. It is that all buttons are at least dimly lit, but when in, they brighten up. But i dont understand what fan it is you turn on for the a/c light to go out? That doesnt sound right to me.

Sounds like you might have some sort of electrical problem here. Here's how it should work:

With the snowflake button out, it should not be lit up blue. When you push the snowflake button in, it should turn blue, the compressor will engage, and the fan should turn on the lowest setting even if the fan selector is set to 0. If you turn the fan switch to a higher setting (1-4), then the blue snowflake should stay on and the fan should simply run faster. If you push the snowflake button to pop it back out, the blue light will turn off and the compressor will disengage. The fan will stay running at whatever speed you have it selected at until you switch it back to 0 to turn it off.

Basically, the A/C is on whenever the snowflake button is pushed in and lit up blue. Selecting any fan speed should not turn off the blue light, because the fan will always run at at least the slowest speed whenever the snowflake button is pressed in and the compressor is on. Turning the headlights on doesn't light up the snowflake button when the A/C isn't on, at least not in my car.

I thought the owner's manual said the best defogging occurs with the fan on full, heat on full, the windshield on full, the lower two sliders to off, and the A/C on (to remove humidity in the air). As far as I know those sliders only control flaps that let air into the respective sections of the ventillation. I don't think there are any switches in there.

But I may be wrong.

I think I read something about there being switches in there. However, if there are switches in there, they don't work in my car, because the A/C will stay on no matter what flap is opened, and it'll stay on with all of them closed.
