hi to everyone,

i have a '99 328i. i am having an odd problem with my a/c. i recently had my fan belt replaced. i'm not sure if this had anything to do with this but here goes, there is a loud clicking noise coming from the a/c compressor area. the clicking is only there when the a/c is on. while the car is idle i do not hear it, but when i press the accelerator the clicking is really loud from 1k to 2k rpm then practically gone by 2.2k rpms. the dealer said that i need to have the a/c compressor replaced. what does this sound like to you guys. the clicking noise is like the noise a card makes clicking on the spokes of a bicycle. also, is the a/c only supposed to blow cool air while you're pressing the accelerator and it doesn't when you don't press the accelerator?
thanks

I assume this noise was not there before you replaced the a/c belt? If not try another belt, you may have a defective belt or it may have been damaged during the install.

I have a 1999 323i with an A/C problem as well. When you first turn the A/C on, do you hear a very loud "rattling" from under the hood? Sometimes, it is loud enough that it can be heard from outside the car., while other times it is more faint. Usually it occurs only when you first turn on the A/C, but it has been known to occur at random while driving. Strangely enough it seems to be linked to depressing the clutch. If your problem is similar, let me know, and I'll let you know what I've done so far to try and fix it, as well as some of the ideas I have gathered from the BMW TIS CD.

Well, mine made that noise for a few minutes, then the idle cycled speed somewhat, then in a few minutes the engine died at idle, and under the hood it stunk. Restarted the car without the AC on, started fine, turned on the AC, and the compressor turned just a few degrees and stopped with the belt still trying to turn it. Looks like a locked up compressor to me!!
