i'm pretty sure that the a4 will have a better 0-60 time than the bmw because of it's AWD but MAYBE the 325i can beat it in the long run, because the bmw can pull. Not sure tho, i'm not a Bmw genius, jus my 2 cents

I have a A4 1.8T quattro 6-speed and could not be happier with it, except I find that the acceleration is a tad slow and the brakes are pretty crappy compared to the ones on the 3.0

A4 1.8T Quattro 6-Speed vs BMW 325i 5-Speed (both manual):

BMW is faster to 60mph: 7.9 seconds vs 7.1

As far as handling, the Audi packs really great handling and razor-sharp steering that is second only to BMW.

The BMW is a better machine, but the Audi's cheaper price tag, easily tunable engine (drop in a chip for another 40hp or so), and Quattro AWD makes it a really great alternative.

With the sports package, the handling on my A4 is similar to par with my M3.
Definitely at lower speeds. But as you go faster and faster, the M3 will be more planted to the road and will take the turns better. /// M Power

true it is a hard decision. but the Full maintenence program of BMW and resale value really makes it a little more practical. I like the audi alot but if i do a turbo upgrade or a chip upgrade the warranty will be voided, and knowing audis reliablity with electronics and many other little things it does make the situation much tougher.

I had a 2001 audi a4 1.8t, had a chip put in, borla exhaust, K&N cone intake, bilstein shocks with H&R springs, 17" wheels with michelin pilot sports....i have to say that the BMW 330 ci is the better overall car. The handling of the Audi was superp, but BMW is better. The maintenance was like BMW's, full service maintenance was done under warranty. The chip was never detected as it was an APR chip. If I had to make a choice today as with what car i would go with, it would be the BMW with a good set of snow wheels and tires.

Yeah I went with the 325i. Its a 5sp with HK, Power Seats and Mnrf, and Sport Package. And IT HANDLES CURVES like nothing ive driven. Of course im 17 so i havent driven many cars, but im impressed. Are all BMW clutches this hard and the gear boxes are very long throw?

Most clutches are smooth as silk -- bmw's tend to give you a stronger more defined clutch feel. Mine is very stiff... a few of the girls i've let (try to) drive it, said they couldn't keep their foot on the clutch too long.

The shifter, on any car (except maybe porsches) typically has a fairly long throw. You can get short-shift kits - which are about $300 - and will make it feel much better.

My clutch is really stiff...I think it's overly stiff as it's probably the stiffest clutch I've ever used. I'm so used ot it though, even in sitting in hours of stop-and-go traffic. I remember at the 04 NYC Auto Show, I went in a couple 330 BMW's and some Audi's and all of the clutches were easy as pie to modulate, even the new S4's clutch!
I think nowadays for people to deal with stick shift as their primary car, auto manufacturers have to make their manual transmission cars easily drivable. The 1-2 shift should be nice and easy to do, the clutch shouldn't be too stiff, and the gearbox should be quick and easy to shift and not too many vibrations.
