[:(!] I was cleaning my windows today and it seems the ammonia concentrate was too high in the window cleaner and it messed up the tints on 3 of my windows.I went to the shop and basically a lot the guys in the nyc wants to charge me $500 to remove the existing tint and redo all the windows and rear glass. Is this the going cost or is it too high ?I can remove the tint myself but wont mess with the rear glass for fear of damaging the defogger strips. That should reduce the cost. What do you guys think?

be careful with the rear window. The sides are easy. Any autoparts store should have window tint remover spray. You just peel off the colored film, spray the stuff on the glue, and wipe off. Very easy.

And yeah, make sure your window cleaner doesn't have ammonia if you have tint. Lots of cleaners now say "tint safe." Pros actually don't use Windex or the like. They have this weird spray that sorta looks like dry foam. Some window making factory worker showed me. Guess he was bored cuz I learned much more about the glass industry than I wanted too while I was waiting for my glassware.

Sorry guys for the delayed response,I had pink eye and so I wasnt able to reply.I used windex glass cleaner, funny thing it only messed up the windows not the rear glass.I tried the tint remover, got it from pep boys ,it works great.I wont do the rear glass though,am afraid I may damage the defogger strips.I will try to have the windows redone this weekend.I will let you guys know the result. Thanks again

What exactly did the damage look like? What does the ammonia do to the tint?

I once used a light spray of Windex on one side window on mine with no bad results. Although the shop that tinted mine said use water only to clean the stuff. I usually just lightly wipe with a clean, wrung out chamois. Seems to do the trick.

How does everyone clean their tint? I want to do this right so I don't scratch it or worse.

Wow, sorry to hear about your misfortune. At least you don't have to pay someone else to remove the tint. Thanks for the heads up!!

What brand tint that was on your car? Is no windex the same advice for all tints?

The tint began to strip off the glass in small amounts, looks like party glitter,in others areas it looks as if someone wipe the glass with glue.I dont know what brand of tint was used,I had it done in 2001.I dont think its any particular brand of glass cleaner as long as it dosnt contains ammonia. Thanks again.
