Obviously, K&N is the way to go. They are a well-known brand and they deliver. With a K&N air filter, you'll gain like 1 or 2hp, but your engine will be eating more shit. Decide if it's worth it for you!

It's a pretty heated discussion that has been going on for a long time. The speculation is that K&N filters let more, (larger?), particles of dirt through over the factory filter.

I use pretty much whatever and I change it often. I've used STP, BMW OEM, and basically whatever I find on the shelf at AutoZone, Pep Boys, etc. I'm sure that is blasphemy to some, but I change my filter twice a year. You can argue whether a K&N is that great (assuming you keep it clean). I think for most people any new filter is better than keeping a filter past it's prime or a cleanable one that is not propertly maintained. At 109,500 I have had no problems.
