No, it's a dealer-installed "accessory." My car is still on order, but the tip I received is to forgo the alarm when you take delivery of the car and have it installed later by the service department. That way you pay ~$500, rather than ~$800.

I heard on another board that the OEM alarm is standard on 2003+ cars... Anyone know if this is true or not?
All 3 series come pre wired for an OEM alarm but it is not installed. Alarm hardware is about $250. Installation and activation by dealer 1 - 2 hrs @ standard labor rate. There are some straight forward do it yourself if you are handy with the tools. Either way you will pay the dealer to activate your OEM alarm.

Possibly a better question might be

Why BMW does not include their OEM alarm as standard equipment. My sales person told me there was no reason for an alarm because the vehicle was impossible to steal. When I asked why the 5 series came with an alarm as standard equipment I received a blank stare.

LOL! [rofl] Seriously!

Isn't the garage opener the same way? Or can you now get that done at the factory. I guess they were throwing a few bones to the dealers so they can suck us from dry to dehydrated.

I was told if the car is not started by the key.........the computer shuts off the car........hence why an alarm is not needed to keep from being stole............vandalized is another story tho.....

Exactly...without a tilt sensor, they'll jack your car up and steal your wheels. And without a motion sensor, they're break in and take stuff out of your car.
They'll never get your car started without a handshake from one of your keys…but they can be up to all sorts of mischief in the meantime without an alarm (especially if any of us keeps our valet key in the glove compartment)!!!

What the BMW alarm needs is a shock sensor. I can't believe it doesn't come with one. Vandalizing a BMW is easy cuz you can bash it in completely and the alarm won't go off.

Mercedes comes standard with leather and an alarm. Dunno why BMW doesn't. I can live without the leather (since BMWs isn't all that great), but I wish I had the alarm. Sometimes, it's real hard to tell if I locked the car or not. Flashing lights or a chirp would help a lot in that department.

My lights do flash when I unlock and lock.........it will only do it once, cant keep validating if I unlocked or locked. The dealer programmed it for me before I picked up the car. The other is the blinking clown nose, makes it look like I've got an alarm.

Read this:

I read this desription of the alarm differently. It does have a motion, tilt and glass breakage sensor.
