I have a whine that varies with the RPM's. It sounded like an alternator bearing going bad, so being more of a parts changer, than a mechanic, I replaced the alternator. The whine is still there. Any other suggestions?
It might be a pulley and not the actual alternator.
There is a way of testing but it requires you to be careful. Take a long (I mean long) flat head screw drive and put the mental bit near each pulley and put the butt near your ear and have someone rev the engine. This will tell you generally where the sound is coming from.
It could also be the water pump? maybe a tensioner?
Just some thoughts; sorry can't be more of a help.
