i've read a few zhps that have had the same stalling problem that i seem to have now. it happens very rarely but when i'm going slow speeds like in 1st going around a parking lot it'll just stall on me and trust me its not my driving [hihi] it's only happened 5 times so far (2 of which happened like within seconds of each other) and i dunno if its worth seeing the dealer but i think its like a faulty code or somethign.

Yes, I have had the same problem, it just does not want to stay going at times. It happens most often when at a stop after the clutch is disengaged. I was told this is a common problem and no fix was offered.

Just as a note:

When my '01 X5 was new (< 1K miles) I had a stalling problem just as you are describing. I took it in and they reprogrammed something and it has not stalled since (58K miles now).

"I was told this is a common problem and no fix was offered."

Is that how it was left? Those kinds of answers are to test the water with you to see how much BS you will accept. It is no skin off the dealers back to fix problems under warranty. They are paid well by BMW to fix warranty issues. The dealer's responsibility certainly extends to offering to contact BMW and let them know it is a problem if that has not happened already.

DON'T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER.

You paid a perfect price so demand perfect service and a perfect product.

My girlfriend had the same problem with my car. i'll let her type what she found out.

The car would die on me when at an almost stop. It didn't matter if it was in first or neutral. Also at times when at a stop there was a strange iratic idle. I took it to the dealship to have it looked at adn they said there wasn't a problem also. So I continued to drive the car around and it happened again a few weeks later to sketch. I then went to another dealership and told them about the problem. They told me there were two possibilities. The throttle positioner or the cam shaft sensor, and we haven't made an appointment yet to get this checked.

so what do you think it is?

bmw330ipp, bryan330i:

I saw this in another forum on yahoo. Don't know if this is your problem, but at least its something to look into:

Here's a cut & paste from the above link:

I am having the exact same problem - had the Vanos
unit replaced ~2 years ago and the problem is back
again... I am just starting to work with BMW NA and
the dealer to get this looked at...

geesh, i haven't run into this problem yet at 2.5k, but this just may become another "sliptronic" esq thread.. [:(] with more zhp owners coming up with the issue..

for those that have this issue already, hopefully those lazy ass dealers would get their acts together and resolve the issue and quickly. i'll thank my good luck until it happens to me i suppose...

I have had the same problem with my 2003 325Ci (not gone in for this yet) and 2002 325i. The first time it happened I thought maybe I had done something. But it happened multiple times over a couple of months while going slow in first or neutral. The dealers answer was that there was no fault code so nothing was wrong (nice!). I can only speculate the computer lets the vehicle's engine speed drop too low and it stalls.

I can't wait to hear their answer when I complain again about the 3rd gear occasionally popping out of gear (into neutral) when just driving easy in 3rd. I am sure I will get "nothing is wrong here"

[rofl] thats funny... but how does it move from 3rd to neutral w/o pressing the clutch? hopefully they'll find a problem there.

i read in a post on e46fanatics.com once where they had this same stalling problem but that their dealer said nothing was wrong, but he said that theres obviously something wrong when your car stalls 3 times in a row while driving! [hihi] but for me it only happens like when in a parking lot going very slow or like backing out of the driveway so its not too big of a problem

Had similiar problem with stalls/very rough idling...basically engine misfiring, the day after I picked up the car. At first dealership couldnt determine the problem, but on repeat visit (after tech drove car for 260miles[confused] ) turned out to be bad engine coil, and very easy fix. No problems since (3500miles now).
