Hi am interested to see photos of 2004 model E46's with the 6 speed SMG gearbox

Does it have paddles like the M3?

Anyone got any specs on the 3-series SMG box eg. speed of shift etc

According to magazine articles on the SMG of the Z4 (the same system that's gonna be on the E46), the thing is slower than molasses in the winter. Basically, if the computer in that system raced a snail, the snail would win. And be much smoother while doing it.

codex, howcome the SMG is slow in the winter on the Z4 and 3-series? Maybe like a manual transmission, it just has to warm up before it shifts properly? [???1]

err, my idiom referred to how molasses moves in the winter, not the smg. Molasses moves REALLY slowly, if at all when it's too cold. I've got a couple of magazines in my room right now that have articles which don't like the Z4 SMG and one really trashed the performance of the SMG in the Z4. I don't think they were tested in the winter tho so I dunno if there's a difference in performance due to teh weather.

There's a nice picture of the 330i SSG steering wheel in the latest BMW 3 series sedan catalog. (Ask your friendly dealer!) It's the page right after the Performance Package section. The same catalog has a smaller picture of the wheel and shifter both. It looks rather nicer than the SSG setup in the Z4, I think.

BTW, I drove a Z4 with SSG in the sport manual mode, and I didn't notice the problems that the Bimmer article talks about. The upshifts didn't feel as snappy as the M3's SMG, but they still compared well to my own shifting with a manual. Downshifts are amazingly good and fast. I plan to get one myself.

Paddles are a big improvement over M3, with forward motion giving downshift, back motion up. Left and right paddles behave the same. I much prefer the positioning and shape of the SSG (330i and Z4) paddles to the SMG (M3) paddles. (I have driven both.)
