JTravick ... you did the right thing. I am not very impressed with the new 4 series/3 series ... and this is not just a case of sour grapes since I too have an '04. I am expecting a similar reaction to the new 3/4 series when it goes into production as the new 5 series has already experienced...disappointment. The 3 series and 5 series have always received the highest acclaim from all major car magazine's and other ratings/reviews. The e46 3 series and e39 5 series were considered perfect ... 5 series sales actually significantly increased in the last model year of the e39 because people wanted to grab up perfection while they could. I am glad I ordered an '04, not only for the fact that I wouldn't ever want the first model year of a vehicle (until after all bugs were worked out) .. but also for the fact that I think the e46 is such a classic, tried and true solid BMW. The direction of BMW seems to be resembling Japanese design more and more everyday : ( I just hope with this new direction BMW isn't losing its classic infamous "soul".

I'm with Susie on this one. From the photos and video, the new 3 looks like it might be a little bigger and might have some beafer options as far as the engine goes, but I wasn't impressed. I actually thought it was kind of ugly and more along the lines of japanese styling. I love the way that the '03/'04 models look and besides adding a little more power, I just can't see why they'd want to mess with it.
I don't return from my deployment to the middle-east for another 3 wks. I'm eagerly pursuing a good price from some dealers close to me on an '04 via email. The video & pics make me want to get home just a little bit quicker so I know what I'll be getting. I don't plan on holding out for the '05 at all.
However everyone has their own tastes. This is just my opinion, but like Susie said, I think it's going down the same road as the 5 series. No thanks.

This is not fact, but it is widely thought that : The '05's will be the same as the current model, its the '06 (sedan) that will be the change, available in late 2005.

BMW's looks grow on you. It's like when the E46 came out everyone liked the E36 and said the E46 was too much like the E39s. But just wait till it arrives, everyone will love it after a while, if not already.

I totally agree!! The redesigned 3 is reminding me of a VW Jetta and the new Acura TL (and I am not a fan of either).

It only looks like a Jetta because of the masking that makes the rear tail lights look like a Jetta. Those are not the actual tail lights, just red masking in the shape of tail lights.

The car is disguized. That is not the way it looks.

Isn't it supposed to come to the US in fall of 2005 as a 2006 model anyway?
If so, you still have one full model year to get the current style. So 2004s are not the last chance to get an E46. You can still wait a year and get a 2005 E46.

Thanks for the detailed information! It seems strange that they would reduce the hp of the 330i and only raise the 330is to 250hp, especially since the G35 and TL, it's main "competitors", are at approx 270.

Just found this 5/28/04 post on another board:

Hope nobody's holding their breath for a next-gen M3 [80?]

Too bad. No more 325i if the information is true.
I wonder if the new base model is going to be priced higher than the current 330 or if it will be priced between the 325 and the 330 since there will no longer be the entry-level 325i sedan offered?
BMW will no longer have vehicle in the US competing with the Audi A4 and C230 sedan if it is going to be priced the same or even higher than the current 330i. The 1 series is too small to compete with an A4 or C class and may only be 2-series coupes anyway.
Looks like you could get a 325 coupe for another year though.

The only good news (if this info is true) is that the new E90 body style will be available next summer during the time frame of my European vacation, but if BMW may have priced it out of my range if it costs the same or even more than the current 330i so I may end up still not getting it.

I wonder what the ratio of 325 to 330 sales in the US is now? Some 325 buyers will upgrade to a 330, but I bet a lot of people looking for an entry-level luxury vehicle in the $32-$38K range will go to the competition (CTS, A4,G35,TL,TSX,C230).

I have to believe that the entry level 330i (or whatever BMW calls it) will probably be at or near the same price point as the present 325i. Certainly, BMW will want to price it to prevent a migration to the competition.
Hopefully the 2006 base 330i will be priced close to a current 325i, but some people believe true BMW buyers do not care about price.
