Just wondering how right are those who say after 100k mi your automatic tranmission is about to fail.

Does anyone here have a 3-series E46 with a properly working auto tranny past 100k mi? Say 150k, 200k? That HASN'T been replaced, of course :)

Please quote your mileage too. Just want to find out the truth as my E46 recently hit 100mi,

auto tranny

spoke w/ my bmw super mechanic today about changing the fluid on my 2000 328i tranny; it has the steptronic shift (manual of auto) he said you dont need ever to change the fluid. he says bmw uses a type of fluid that costys $50.00 per liter and the tranny takes about 6 quarts so its expensive. believe it or not he is very cost conscious w/ his customers. He says that because the fluiod is of such a high grade it is designed to last and there is no need to change it. He says its possible to get well over 150,000 miles on the tranny. Noah

i have about 135k on my E46 328i and still running good. but I am planning on changing the fluid and filter this coming March. There is a really good step by step instructions with pictures on one of the forums, but let me search for it and i'll post it later for you.

Jinxed

I should never have responded to this thread. Last week I got the dreaded gear symbol, codes were read and indicated "stall" which the car never did. This happened several times,I have since had a trans. service (new fluid, filter and additive) BTW the fluid was black. Keeping my finger crossed, so far so good. IMHO, have your fluid changed before 100,000 + miles.

Who did your service? BMW? If so, I wonder what they had to say about this light and subsequent fluid change - since it is a "lifetime" thingy.... (according to them only of course).

No, lifetime means that BMW will not change the fluid during the warranty period and that if it breaks after that, well that was it's lifetime. I service an automatic every 30-35k regardless.
