Hey guys, I was thinking of ordering the automatic garage door opener kit for my 2000 323I. It looks like a very simple install. What i need to know is if all the 323's are pre-wirred for this. Also, has anyone done this installation, and it as easy as it looks. Thanks

Yep it's easy, there's two tricky parts, digging out the correct wire to connect it to, (sometimes it's stuck back pretty far). And then, getting it to sync up to your garage door opener can be trying if you have a roaming code type of opener.

Otherwise, it's a snap!

It should be on the passenger side. I reached it with my fingers, but I believe that there can be two wires up there. You just need to make sure that that you use the correct one.

boomerbimmer,

What kind of garage door opener do you have? I used to be a garage door/operator technician and I often ran into people that wanted to code their Genie door openers to the Home-Link systems in their cars. If you have a Genie, you'll need to install an extra box to make it Homelink compatible. That is, unless you shelled out big bucks for the super expensive Genie opener.

Other models like Liftmaster, Sears, Chamberlain, Wayne-Dalton...etc... you shouldn't have any problems.

Custom, I do have Genie door openers. They are new but they are just the regular screw-drive models. I bought and installed them about a year ago. What kind of problems might I have. Please tell me more about this box and any other info you can. Thanks

Custom3, what the heck are you talking about?

The OEM BMW transceiver is homelink compatible!!!!! To get it to work your lights in the house you would have to install some modules in the house. Or to work your garage door lights, same thing.

However if all you want to do is open your damn garage doors, you don't need anything additional!!!!!!

I have the transceiver installed in my car boomerbimmer. It will work just fine with your genie garage doors. Mine works with rolling codes (my garage doors and yours) and fixed codes (my gate).

Thanks for the info Rocks. Did you have any problems getting it to sync up. If you did are there any secrets to it.
That other thread is a little confusing to me. It deals more with troubleshooting. All I did was follow the instructions that came with the transceiver and I was able to get it to work with the "rolling code" type for buttons 1 and 2, and a "fixed code" type for button 3.

One thing you may need to know is the unit is not powered when the key is off. So program it with the key on. Also, do a reset on it before you start (follow instructions).

No problems, mon.

bmwrocks,

I never said that the BMW system wasn't Homelink compatible. What I did say was not all Genie openers are Homelink compatible. As long as your Genie opener has Intellicode or has the 12 microswitches inside the remote & openerhead that you program manually, you should be okay.

A lot of the old openers that don't have one of those two items require a universal receiver in order to to work with in-car remotes. The best one I know of that isn't super expensive is the Liftmaster LM 635 and it runs about $70 at any garage door shop. But like I said, if you have the switches or the Intellicode Genie opener, you should be okay.

I hope this clarifies.

Kind regards,
