Aux Audio & Nav AGAIN... :(

Hi All:

I posted a few days ago inidcating that my local BMW dealership fealt that the Aux Audio Adapter was incompatible with an E46 w/ Nav.

After doing research on this board and some helpful pointers from you'all, it became clear that the dealership had ordered the wrong part (they ordered the w/o Nav part number).

Desert BMW of Las Vegas just got the proper part in, and they claim it is still not possible to install in my car.

They say the tuner for my radio is in (or near) the trunk. The Aux Adapter lead is only 3'... so they can't figure out how to run the cable properly.

They have invited me into the shop on Saturday to go over the installation manual and try to find a solution (this is very important to me).

My question to all of you is this... where can I find the install guide online? Is there a DIY guide for Aux audio WITH Nav somewhere? What other net-based resources might be helpful in educating my dealership?

Oh man, there is a guy with a 2001 330xi w/nav who posted a nice DIY with great pics of how to do that exact installation. I will search for it for a bit and see if I can find it.
I know this may sound stupid, but what about cable extension? I believe that is what the 330xi owner used to hook up his iPod to the Aux port in the trunk. Or am I misunderstanding what you are trying to do?

I want the Aux Adapter input to be in the glovebox (as it's advertised by BMW)... this is to put my iPod on... and in the glovebox there's a powersource I can easily tap into, and it's out of site... but easy to take with me should I need to. :)

Thanks for the research! :)

Okay, I did some research. There are a few ways to go about this. First off, the navigation does not prevent installation of the Aux input. You have two options:
The first one is to have the Aux input installed in the trunk near the CD changer (which is typical installation) and just run an extended cable through the interior which hooks up to your iPod. Your dealership should be clever enough to be able to run the wire from the trunk all the way to the front dash area without it being exposed.

The second option (the way you want) is to have the dealership drill holes in the glove compartment and tap into the navigation system. It requires removal of the navigation unit (so they can acccess the wires behind the screen) but it is very feasible and looks like a very standard procedure...I don't understand why the delaership is so confused.
Here is a link to the installation instructions, which I had to grab off of a Yahoo! Group.

http://www.amirsaleh.com/Emile/AUX.pdf

Go to page 7 (or just click on Section 3 on the left) and it shows exactly where to drill the holes in the glove compartment. Page 8 shows how to hookup the AUX input connector to a navigation-equipped E46 3-Series. As you can see, it's not something I would try to do myself, but your dealership should really have no problem with it at all.

I really hope this helps. I know there are some members on this board who were in the same position as you (wanted to hookup their iPods to their stereos), so I hope they can provide some good info. I didn't know anything about this stuff until today so I hope I am not giving you the wrong information !!

Wow... this looks really straightforward! Honestly... this isn't hard at all... I don't know why Desert BMW of Las Vegas can't read the manual as well as I can... it's not complicated!

Thanks for all of your help everyone! :)

Anyways, since we both provided the same manual, suntigen shall I take it down from my server or would you like it up for a while longer?

Most dealers are not familiar with this process. This 'quick job' as referred to by my salesperson ended up being a 3 hour job. They only charged me for one hour labor though. It was the first install of the aux input with navigation that they had done. Works great though!
