I notice there are three steel attach points behind the rear seat, and
assumed these were for a car seat.

Has anyone gone through this car seat shopping exercise?

I'm looking for a car seat which protects the child, utilizes the attach points,
and will not cause damage to the vehicle.

The Peg line(and most other high end seats) has what is termed "LATCH" system for attachment points in most vehicles since 2003. The car seat bases have a special "LATCH" belt right on the base, but the seat bases can also be put in older vehicles with a lap belt as well.
I will tell you this, after just having our first kid in December and trying the 3 series with a car seat, it is very hard and annoying to get a seat in and out of that small back seat. So much so that we just traded in our 325xi on a new 4Runner. I hated to get rid of that car, but there was just no way we were going to deal with that problem every time we took the kid someplace.

Thanks Chicago. Imagine how that will be with a coupe!

Not trading in my coupe, though. :)

Does the carseat damage the leather/vinyl seats? Was thinking
of putting a blanket underneath, so there won't be an imprint once
it's removed later on.

They make a nice looking seat protection cover that will also catch food leter on. It is like $20 at most baby stores, called "Prince Lionheart, 2 stage seat protector" I just put that in under the seat base yesterday to protect the new leather in the 4Runner
