Recently, I noticed that my back-up lights don't work. I don't know how long this has been going on, but it can be a big problem. I checked the bulbs and they work so it is something else. Also, when they are supposed to turn on in a 5 speed?

I don't have a manual in front of me but I think there is a switch on the shifter that engages when you hit reverse that turns those lights on.

Did you put a shift kit in? Something might have happened then.

From the Bentley manual: On cars with manual transmission, the lights receive power through the back up switch when the transmission is put into reverse gear. The switch is located on the transmission and is accessible from beneath the car. Check the switch by removing the electrical connectors from the switch and check for continuity across the switch terminals with the transmission in reverse. A new switch should be torqued to 14 ft lb.
