backpressure valve

[BMW9700]

the flap at the tip of the exhaust of my E46 323i is, to my knowledge called a "back pressure valve"

i have removed the vacuum hose connected to this and have experienced an increase in low end performance e.g the initial pick up..i also noticed that the noise level has increased to a nice bassy rumble during idle and upon acceleration..please care to comment if any of you guys out there have experimented with this.

You experienced an increase in low end performance? The backpressure valve should actually increase low-end torque when it is connected. Disconnecting it should theroretically decrease acceleration off the line.

Are we talking about the crankcase vent valve and hose?

no, actually this valve sits in the rear exhaust box tip.
