I started my car this a.m. and it was idling rough, this just happened, I had drove the car last night no problem. I called the dealer thinking I might have got some junk in the gas. The service advisor said they have had some 325s come in with this problem, he said it appered when the outside temp got cooler. The problem being a bad ignition coil, they are replacing all six with Bosh coils. Has anyone encountered this? Why didn't it happen last winter?

Sir,

This is a common problem with the later model 325i's with the newer M54 motors; the new coils had a problem in your car AND the new seven series as well. The Bosch coils that I've replaced in every car I've done this campaign on seem to have addressed this issue well, as not one has come back with another coil problem. I hope this eases your worries a little. :)

(Edit: forgot to tell you, I'm a BMW Tech at a dealer, lol)

Got mine replaced twice! The first when the car was just 2 months old. The dealer only replaced one coil :( The second happened spring time this year. The dealer then decided to replace all 6 six coils. I hope this is the end of the problem.

Cost of replacing 6 coils is about $1200.

I was lucky that I still have the warranty.

Today it happened to me AGAIN! My car is a year and a half old and this was the second time i had to have coils replaced. Started up this mornning to a rough idle, no power, and check engine light came on. I limped it to the dealership. Warranty work said total parts for 2 Bremi coils and one spark plug was $55.44. Lord knows how much they would stick it to us if not under warranty with labor....

Add me to the list. First time was March '03, then again just this week. New coils both times. Just got my car back today (thankfully they gave me a loaner, e60, but that's a story for another post). Btw, my car is only a year and a half old too.

Had the coils changed yeaterday by the dealer, the car runs great again. Just wonder how many more time they will have to be replaced. Then when the car is out of warranty how many times will it have to be replaced. Zman said this is a $1200 fix, having to pay that out of pocket sure would suck.

When I asked what caused coils to fail, the BMW dealer service advisor told me that they are just like a light bulb. They WILL go out once a while.

When I heard that, my stomach turned and said to myself "O...S$it!!!". My house light bulbs go out once a year given that I turn it on daily. I uses my car daily. So, at least I have to cough out $1200/year just for this problem, not to mention other problems. We are F%*K#D!!!!

Where did the BMW tech go?

I've had my '99 E46 for six years now this month. My coils have never failed...knock on wood. I'm wondering if this is an involved Do-It-Yourself, because mine should require replacing at some point, shouldn't they? Aren't the coils right there on top? I think i've heard people upgrading them as a performance mod? I don't know to what...or have I got this all wrong. If they go out after a year or so, they are faulty, poorly made ones from the beginning, I'm thinking.

aNoodle, it must not be a big deal to change, the tech at the dealer did it in 45 min. I might be wrong but I would think you could do it yourself if you have some good tools and can do some mechanical work.

I think he fed you a bunch of crap. A well designed, well made coil should out last most other parts in the car. And a BMW coil gets only 1/6th of the electrical stress as compared to most other cars. Most other cars have ONE coil for all cylinders. I've never replaced a single coil on any of my cars in 30 years.

I have 2003 325i AT. I think it's an M54 (ULEV).

Coil on cylinder #5 was the culprit behind a rough running engine
below 3000 rpm.

Recalling the receipt, they replaced all 6 coils under a campaign.

I got the car in Aug 2003 and had the problem in Oct 2004.
All seems well now.

This weekend I started my car and it once again had idel rough. I said to my self "here we go again...". [kick]

I let it sit for 30 seconds and fortunately it went away. The "check engine" light didn't go on. I am not sure what to expect. [B)]

Is it because a change of weather as it is getting colder? But, I put my car inside the garage.
