Bad shock mounts??

Can bad shock mounts cause the brakes to feel like it's failing?? Whenever I go over a fairly big pothole and am stepping on the brakes at the same time, the brake pedal feels like it bottoms out an inch and there is a surge? in the pedal feel. Braking doesn't seem affected though. This happens with either front wheel going over a pothole. Also, there is a clanging noise when the front wheels go over a big pothole. Is there a way to check the shock mounts?? What else can it be?

Oh, the car has 52K on it. 01 325i

Not shock mounts at all, that is almost guaranteed to be your ABS kicking in.

When you hit a bump or pothole while you brake, the tire looses traction and therefore starts to lock up. The ABS interprets this as a skid. All it knows is that the tire is spinning slower than the rest, it doesn't know if it is ice, water, or a "floating" tire. The pedal surge you feel is the ABS system kicking in.

If you can SAFELY test this theory, watch for the ABS light on the dash. It will come on briefly when this occurs.
