Bargain or Can of Worms?

I've been looking for a daily commuter or "beater", and I have the opportunity to buy a 1997 318i for $4000. Mileage is 137k, but it appears to have been well cared for and maintained. Anything I should look at in particular? I know my way around the e30 and e46 pretty well, but have less experience of the e36.

check the rsm and subframe for cracks

Automatic or stick? Autos can develop problems anywhere from 100k to 200k, clutches need replacing anywhere from 150k to 200k. Price sounds right.

Subframe looks to be OK as far as I can tell. Transmission is auto, feels strong. Needs cosmetic stuff, and a steering wheel - exisiting wheel is usable, but top half is "floppy" to the touch, I guess the sun has damaged it. Anyone know how easy it is to replace? My biggest concern is that the dash warning lights do not work. Anyone know a fix for this?

that gives some cause for concern, i bet you can find a car that doesn't need much for 4k, just my stupid opinion though

OK. I've decided against this one. Thanks for your input guys. If you or anyone you know is selling an e36 that might fit the bill, let me know.
