Belt/Coolant Problem

So last week, the steering belt snapped on my car. The idler pulley also broke. Got those fixed.

Anyway, when I took the car for a spin, it started to overheat within five minutes. The thermometer was very hard to take off, but we finally got it and tested it. It seems fine.

Any ideas what's wrong?

Do you mean the radiator cap, not "therometer"? I would guess the best that "snapped" was also the water pump belt and you have either not got the belt routed correctly and the water pump is not turning, or the water pump is bad, thus causing the belt to snap? Also if you took the radiator cap off you need to bleed the air from the system.

if you mean thermostat and it was fine id burp the coolant system and look for the water pump as when my tensioner pullies went they took the belts and the waterpump at the same time but i will say i didnt notice any overheating the day the pump failed

Your post is a bit confusing as you're using some unidentified vocabulary to call things, but I gather your water pump/alternator belt broke and you replaced it along with the water pump (pulley)... If so - then refilling the radiator with coolant is never as simple as puring new one into the reservoir tank. After you've removed the water pump, a lot of coolant has leaked out and it was naturally replaced with air - therefore you have an air bubble in your system, not allowing enough coolant to flow in when you refill it. There is a special procedure to refill it - otherwise your car will, as you have experienced it, overheat quickly.
