I've heard of them, but they aren't that common.

Dinan and Benfer are two other ones that seem pretty popular, but the one that most people who are into modding their cars seem to like is Gruppe M, particularly the carbon fiber version.

BFP is popular among E46Fanantics crowd. I am personally not a big fan of the BFP or DINAN design intake, since the place the filter too close to the ground - dirt and water hazard. They even sell a "sock" to cover the filter.... doesn't that defeat the purpose of free flow. [???1] Also, these two are a PITA to install.

Gruppe M is defintely a good looking intake. Plus the filter sits up in the engine bay. But for the regular E46, it doesn't get the air from the kidney grill. I got RD Sport (same style as Gruppe M) and can see the downside. I switched from ECIS, also a great system (Conforti is another one of the same style). It's not as great looking as the Gruppe M in the engine bay, but does it's job.

The Gruppe also sounds good - nice rumble! I like the ECIS intakes myself. Not the prettiest ones, but I like the fact that it uses the factory air intake in the front of the hood to direct COLD air into the filter and fireboxed area around the air intake (k&n)). And it's not hanging low to the ground like DINAN and BFP ones do. (In fact it's all shielded by the firewall - nothings getting in but air).

ECIS is a bit less in $ as well from most other intakes.

I havent read about any problems with the intake pulling in water and dirt, please enlighten me as to what happened to these people that had the BFP or Dinan intake. Or is that just a fear of yours that the engine would be dust from some water in the cylinders?

Search other forums for more info. Intakes of that design (filter close to the ground) are prone to sucking up water. That's why AEM came up with the "valve" to counter that effect. Simple rain won't be of a problem, but it's standing water that will get you - hydrolock the engine.

Also, a lot more dirt covers the filter down below rather than above in the engine bay, again by being so close to the ground. That's the reason why K&N started to offer a "protective" cover for the filter.... hmmm why would it be recommended if the filter was "safe"? [fake]

Anybody is free to buy whatever they want, I'm just trying to clarify benefits and distadvantages of varous systems.

We've sold well over 1000 intakes, and not one has had an issue with hydrolock. You would have to go through a puddle higher than the centerline of your wheels to hydrolock with our intake, in which case you've got a lot more to worry about than just your engine. [8]

Please don't hesitate to ask directly if you have any questions.
