My dealer tells me that my '04 ZHP is not prewired for Bluetooth. Too bad, as I would have bought the kit on the spot.

Can the wiring be retro-fitted?

Thanks

Why does EVERYONE always assume that someone has ASSIST? ZHP does not automatically include ASSIST. Only the Premium Pkg comes with ASSIST.

My ZHP does not include Assist. As far as I am told, the wires simply are not there. I haven't looked for myself, but the guy at the parts counter said I definitely do not have it. He gave me a printout of every option code I have, and it's not there.

Is it something I could wire myself, or am I just out of luck?

Thanks

No one assumed he had assist. I just stated that they can't coexist. You assumed I thought he had it. Did you bother to even read through the thread I referenced? Fantom installed bluetooth WITHOUT ASSIST being in the car first.

That thread covers everything you need to know. Sorry for trying to help out. I didn't think I needed to summarize the thread. At least I didn't tell him to do a search.

Andre, the odds are in your favor, but you can look for the wires yourself to be 100%. I bet you have what you need.

Andre, is your car pre-wired for a BMW mobile phone (one that fits in a cradle under the armrest)? You should have a little badge on the inside of your trunk lid that says "prewired for BMW cell phone" or some nonsense like that. If you do have that badge, then you've got the wiring you need (and the built-in microphone, etc.)

Relax. You shouldn't use words like "everyone" in the negative. I don't believe "everyone" thinks the ZHP package includes the optional BMW Assist. Also, using capital letters implies you're yelling. We're all supposed to be friends here.

I haven't checked under the trunk lid, but I will. I did check where the microphone goes, and theres no wire or mike.

The wire may be tucked away. The badge TheBry refers to is a black plastic circle on the edge of the trunk. (top part) you amy also see "Prewired for alarrm" and one other, though I can't recall what the third one is.

hey Robert, thanks for helping out w/ the link, but you actually have to read through a bunch to get to the meat of it. (not your fault, but understand that not everyone likes to read a lot, you know? esp this day and age..) so be patient w/ some of the others..

as for vert and btooth availability. i'd say BMW doesn't want you to have it probably because, if you try to use the hands free kit while the top is down, it would be horrible for hte person at the other end. have you tried using a hands set while walking on a windy day? all the person at the other end will hear is a cupped seashell. (swooshing wind noise.)

but i'm wondering, do they have the cell phone kit pre-wired on the vert? if they do, then my argument makes no sense.. oh well.

Definitely not tucked away. The one for the garage opener was tucked away, but nothing else.

I don't seem to have any such black circle.
(I believe all Canadian 330i's are prewired for the alarm though).

Thanks

So the question remains - can the car be retrofitted with the wiring I need? I'm rather disappointed that it is not prewired. My new phone would have been perfect for it.

I use an ear piece with the top down and have no problem unless big trucks are passing me..........I now have a bluetooth ear piece with my cell phone and still dont have any problems, I guess some of you want to be able to use buttons inside the car, but I'm simple and just like the wireless earpiece........that's what bluetooth means to me........... Hi Andre,

It seems odd to me that all 2004 Bimmers were not prewired. It's not clear to me if you checked with the dealer to see if you could install Assist in you car. If they say you still can, then I'm 99% sure that your car is pre-wired. From what I know, the wiring is there but for verts, dealers say that you cannot have Bluetooth though they are happy to install Assist. What I did was buy the necessary parts and install it myself. I have used handsfree while driving 80 MPH with the top down, windows up, and the windscreen up and callers on the other end can hear me fine, though there is some background wind noise. I'll check with my local dealer and see what they say about pre-wiring on 2004 ZHPs.

Andre,

I have the exact car Phantom does -- with the same options, etc. (except for the color choices we've made). His experience is mine as well. I have the hands-free bluetooth capability (and have since December of last year), had to install it myself, used the BMW Assist wiring, and everything is fine. I use the phone with the top down (and windscreen deployed) and no one has ever complained about wind noise -- and I drive fast.

Check with your dealer about the availability of Assist and be sure to ask them if when they install Assist they'll have to also "wire" the car for the option. Maybe there is some difference in the specs for Canadian vs. American-bound BMW convertibles.
