[thumb] Bimmer 2000 323i clutches last 6 years and 156,451 miles. I know this because mine finally gave up its life at this great distance. The problem it uncovered however is now as costly as the clutch replacement. My transmission is currently not synching my second gear. My car dude, Max, tells me; he's German that I will need a new transmission. The clutch replacement cost only a small kings ransom of $2,264.00 and the replacement tranny is projected at $2,700.00. Currently with the exception of no second gear when down shifting at speed I do not feel the loss. The effect does not appear when starting from a standing stop and shifting from first to second. The gears grind when going into second at speed. I've asked around and I was told to check my gear fluid reservoir for metal shavings and the possibility that there is no gear lube in the reservoir. Any and all opinions are welcome. I've spoken to my ex-car dude in the area I used to live in and he says he can do the replacement tranny for approximately $1,000, which would be a significant savings. Bottom-line, how do I really know I need a new tranny and what should a replacement tranny cost? Happy Motoring...[driving2]

Yikes, dude. 6 years and 156,451 is some pretty heavy duty driving. I've been having some grear shifting irregularities recently too, namely less-smooth shifting and a sticky shifter and grinding feel as well. I'm only at 77K though. Some folks on this board told me to check for shavings and check the fluids and lubes as well, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. (Funny, today was a relatively warm day--60F--and the car seemed to shift pretty nicely).

Who gave you the first quote, a BMW dealer?? I was wondering about the cost of replacing a clutch, and I was hoping for something in the $1000 ballpark. So the "ex-car dude" told you 1K for the transmission, but how much for the clutch replacement??

$2,264 for a clutch replacement!!!!!!! Holy crap! I paid an independent BMW/Mercedes/Audi automotive shop $500 to replace the clutch in my '87 (and that's with OEM Sachs parts). I looked up the price of the clutch kit for your car and it was cheaper than the kit for my '87!!!! ($213 for your kit, $220 for mine). I really don't see how replacing the clutch in an E46 could be THAT much more involved than replacing the clutch in an E30.

[thumb] Parts were $1,178.19, Labor was $1,031.00 with an additional Shop Supply cost of $154.00. The big cost was the Twin Mass Fly Wheel $695.00. My mechanic calls BMW's Brake My Wallet's. I am starting to see the correlation. I will not be going back there as to get my transmission replaced. Happy Motoring...[driving2]
