when i was configuring a 325ci, there was an option in the premium package called bmw assist... it said that it has integrated wireles communication and telematics, and a universal transeiver... what exactly are these things, what do they do, and is the bluetooth phone option one of them??? meaning that if you have a bluetooth phone it will automatically integrate into the car's handsfree and your phone book and other control can be accessed via the car's computer?? and if this is so, is the handsfree prep included in the premium package, or does one have to buy it as an extra option... thanks...

BMW Assist is like OnStar on speed. It gives you all the stuff like transmitting your location for emergency assistance, but also is a concierge service for help in finding entertainment and the like. I can't picture myself ever using it.

The universal transciever is a programmable remote control for opening garages, gates and also Homelink module controller.

The bluetooth compatible phone system is a kit that integrates your bluetooth phone with your BMW. Handsfree, phone book sync, and voice control. The car is standard prewired for it, but you would have to have the kit installed by the dealer or DIY if you are bold enough.

The car is prewired for CD changer, phone, transceiver and security system.

I'm getting ready to have it installed.

From what I've heard, there is an incompatibility between the Assist and Bluetooth. An update is expected soon to solve the problem.

Very cool. Please let me know how it goes. It'd be great to just walk into you car and have it pick up your phone, even if your phone's in the trunk. If you don't mind me asking, how much does the dealer charge?

Parts and labor, I have been given two prices....
1st dealership in Arizona $975
2nd dealership in Arizona $819

That's for everything, (as in no phone options in may car at all currently).

I have no clue as to why one dealer is $120 cheaper, they're within 15 miles of each other.

I was asked if I wanted this option, but said no as I don't have a bluetooth phone at this time. However, the price you were quoted seems ridiculously expensive. All it is is a cradle that integrates into the center arm-rest section, all the wiring is already in place. Shouldn't cost more than a couple of hundred bucks.

Okay I need clarification...There are two buttons on the rearview mirror: one for service and the other incase of an accident...if i press one of those, then it will automatically call BMW assist? Now when i hit the talk button on the steering wheel, i call BMW assist? Can i actually call them to find out where an address is located...what is this concierge service? they must bill you?

That reference is for 2002 model sedans/wagons. I'm certainly no expert but when I got my '04 330Ci the salesman just mentioned that all that was necessary was a cradle adaptor and made it sound like a 10 minute job. I didn't pursue the matter as I wasn't interested at the time.

You may well be right though, or the '04 models might have more onboard infrastructure so the interfacing is less of an ordeal.

As I read, those instructions are labeled as of 03/02, which most technicians will tell you means 03/02 and later. Now considering that things like this are ever changing, I must assume that there are other instructions for other model years, (which we have not seen). To confirm, call your dealer and inquire into the cost of installing this option for your specific model year. If the price is in the same ball park as I listed above, then I would assume that the instructions would be the same for your particular car, BMW Assist models have obviously been excluded from these instructions from what I understand from my dealer.
