Has anyone heard of BMW ASSIST ? I believe its standard in the 7 series and I read somewhere that it will soon be in 3/5 series as well. I just bought a new 3 series that will be built in november and the Premium Package is now $2800 because it includes BMW ASSIST. This is what I read on BMW's website:

"BMW Assist is currently available on all
BMW 7 Series models and will be offered on 3 Series, 5 Series and X5 in
autumn 2003. To use the service, you will need a BMW Navigation System with
an On-Board Monitor and a BMW Cordless Telephone."

Correct me if I am wrong, but the premium package is now $400 more expensive for something you can't even use unless you spend an additional $1700 for the nav and who knows how much for a BMW Cordless Telephone.

Anyone have more info about this ? [mad]

I doubt you need the navigation system and the BMW cordless phone. BMW Assist is BMW's version of GM Onstar or Mercedes Tele Aid. It's basically just a concierge service and also an emergency server (in case you get into an accident or get a flat tire, etc.).

my car has bmw assist...you do need a gps and phone to use it because if your airbags deploy...they call you on the phone to ask you if you're alright, if you dont answer they release emergency vehicles to your location which they identify using your gps...i'm positive u need both the phone and the gps though for Bmw at least....

I just spoke to my dealer, since my '04 325xi is coming in today or tomorrow. I asked about BMW Assist since the company was gracious enough to add that as a standard part of the premium package and charge you for it They changed it for the '04 sedans so that you no longer need the BMW phone to access the system. Everything is wired into the car. First year service comes free, then you have to subscribe.

Hope that helps

I think I heard that it comes with the new 5. Critics complain about it that "smart" power assist. changes the whole BMW driving feel.

Another important point to the system is that:

Assist. adjusts sensitivity of the steering wheel thus leaving the driver guessing just how much to turn it. When you are doing precision driving this is a major drawback for you might accidently over-shift.

Personally, I do not like any computer intfering with my driving experience. Thats just not right.

Yes, everything is already there-no pnone required. It is part of the Premiun Package and not included on 3 series without premium package. I think there is a way to have the same access with the phone but it is not the same system from what I understand.

It's exactly like OnStar. There's a button in the cabin that alerts some central location and I imagine there's a microphone somewhere that can pick up your voice, like we have in our Tahoe. You can hear the other voice through your stereo.

My dealer told me its kinda like onstar, and totaly seperate from any phone you may install. Any install of a phone would have to be done totaly independent of Assist. He also told me that assist is just that assist only, theres no other features like onstar has, its only used if the airbags are deployed.
I should be getting my car this week and will report back on the details of assist.

1st time BMW owner, 1st time posting. I drive a 318iA Motorsport 2.0L.

BMW Assist in New Zealand is standard on all new cars, and a large number of used vehicles sold through the dealerships. Here its just a break-down service, not GPS linked (well maybe for the 7-series). So if you don't feel like changing your own flat tire on the highway when its raining like stink call up the dealer.
