I don't know if I've been unlucky, but I've come across a lot of BMW salesmen who know almost nothing about cars in general and know little more than superficial generalities about BMWs. These guys just try to build a personal relationship and then try to coax you into buying the car. But they offer nothing in the way of technical input to help you in your decision.

Well I finally came across a guy who knows a lot about BMWs and is a car enthusiast like us. His name is Vince Veiga and he is with BMW of Towson which is in MD. He'll answer any technical question you ask, and if he isn't certain about the answer, he doesn't BS you. He just says I don't know the answer but I'll get back to you. He also is an excellent driver and has several excellent test areas in which you can really push the car. Also, he doesn't try to pressure you into buying a car which makes the car buying experience much more enjoyable.

By the way in case you are wondering, I am in no way related to Vince and I have nothing to gain other than rewarding a guy who deserves the patronage of BMW enthusiasts. So if you are in the MD area, don't hesitate to call him.

Bill Bigelow at Century West BMW (Universal City, Calif).

Doesn't always know everything....but he is the most honest, friendly, low-pressure sales guy ever...and he will track a Tech to find the correct answer. Over time, we have bought 5 new Bimmers from him. The sales and even the Service Dept. is so great too. Def. a rewarding car buying experience!!

This has been my experience with every single dealer (not just BMW) I've ever been to. I hate salesmen - I know more about the cars than they do, yet they try to BS about the cars and just make themselves look idiotic.

buy a jetta

When I was first shopping for a BMW, I saw a special they were running on leases for the 3-series. I went to my local dealership to discuss details with a salesman. The guy asked me what I was looking to spend, and I told him about the lease price I saw and told him that fit into my budget. He proceeded to tell me that they didn't carry the car the lease was for, and that it would take 4-6 weeks to get one from Germany. He then told me his ego-story of how he lives "in a world of fifty thousand dollar cars", and that if my budget was that limited that maybe I "should go buy a Jetta." [:(!]

That's an incredible story. No wonder car salesmen are the object of ridicule.
