Brake dust issue

I recently traded an 03 Lexus E300 for an 03 325i. No comparison. Great to be back in a BMW. The first thing I have noticed is the excessive amount of brake dust on the wheels. What are the recommended remedies for this? Any dealer installs available? Best cleaning agent for the wheels?

Thanks

Welcome aboard. There are plenty of answers to your questions thoughout the board - just do a search on brake dust, clean wheels, etc. I found the amount of brake dust lessened once the brakes were "broken in" after a few hundred miles.

The brake dust will never stop. You can wipe the wheels with a towel once every few days. Make sure to keep on top of the brake dust...the longer you let it stay there, the harder it is to remove.
If you always hand wash your car, it is a good idea to purchase a wheel cleaner (preferrably an acid-free one). Just spray it on the cool dry wheel, let it sit for 30 seconds, then rinse it off and voila -- clean wheel!
I've heard that Wheel Wax is not a bad idea, either.

Agree. I spray cleaner on my rims, let it sit for a few minutes and then spray off with a hose. Towel dry after that. I do it every two or three days and it takes less than 5 mins now. When I did it with a dry towel, it was messy and took 15 - 20 minutes.

Other Euro cars have the problem, too. My boss's TT has the same problem.

Soap and water and your elbow grease is the best. I don't think those corrosive cleaners are a good idea in the long run. Those dust brake guards cut down the air cooling down the rotors....which can lead to possible warping. You can buy aftermarket pads that offer less dust, but stopping distances increase for many of them.

I wax my wheels....then the dust just washes away.

My '04 325xi is only about 3 weeks old, so I'm still anal about the brake dust.

I've been taking a bucket of water and a microfiber towel every couple of days, wiping off the brake dust with the wet towel, then doing a quick dry with another towel.

Pretty painless and quick, makes 'em look like new again.

At first I was using paper towels with no water - but the water and a towel makes it come off far easier.

I hope I can manage to keep caring this much about it for a long, long time. It really is painless, and it looks so much nicer than those brake-dust-covered wheels you see so often. It is astounding how much dust these things generate.

bmw brake dusts suck, but it's a good gauge of what kind of driver the owner maybe. mainly those that got the car because they care, or those that got the car because of the propeller emblem. on the bright side, it's a great indicator of when you need a next car wash [:p]

if there's a silverlining to the crappy rain one day, sunny the next, then rain in the afternoon weather michigan is currently going through, it is the fact that my wheels are nearly brake-dust free [:D] (i got a car wash right before this crazy weather pattern)

nothing worse than seeing a 325 rolling around w/ nearly black rims. gunmetal gray rims they are not..

The coating on the bmw wheels are loaded with negatively charged ions.... and the brake dust that deposits is positively charged... hence the huge attraction.

What I've found to work is purchasing a postive ionic wax and the brake dust refuses to stick...

that's actually a line of BS, if you couldn't tell....

elbow grease is what works for me.... I'm so much closer to my car now...

You got me

Longhorn,

You had me going with that rim charge crap.....being a newbie, I'll believe about anything about these cars.

For people recommending cleaners without acid or wax...any specific recommendations?
