The brakes on my BMW are in need of replacement so I took it to the TATE BMW dealership in Annpolis MD and they said I needed new back brakes and it was going to be 500 dollars for just the back brakes. I called back a few days ago and asked what it would cost to repair ALL the brakes because no one ever said "hey your brake pads are getting worn and you should replace them soon" befor it ruined the more expensive rotors..... So I figured I might as well just replace the pads on the front and the whole brakes on the back. I talked to the guy at the BMW service center at TATE and he said that they dont just replace brake pads, that its a BMW and not a Ford and that when they fix brakes the just replace the pads and the rotors because they both get worn... Is this true? When you fix brakes on a BMW do you really replace both the pads and the rotors everytime you fix the brakes?

LOL. I'd say Tate is being very generous with your money.

Over the last 20 years, I must have replaced brake pads at least six times and I never replaced the rotors. Rotors should last much longer than brake pads which on averge will last no longer than 40K miles.

Unless your rotors are cracked or warped, I think you are wasting money replacing the rotors. Take your car to any brake shop and they'll replace the pads for no more than a $150.

I was told the same by Fairfax BMW. I had to replace mine at 37k, just 1k after the included maintenance. They charge like $150 to flush the fluid, so they said it would be best to do them all at the same time as the back ones were also going to need replacement soon (1-2k miles). It was about a thousand dollars to fix it... they replaced rotors and pads.

My first question would be whether or not you guys track your cars. Granted that the softer rotors used on BMWs will have some wear after 35K miles, but there's no way they should need to be replaced. Granted I'm making this observation without benefit of looking at your rotors, but I find it inconceivable that any rotor would be that worn from normal use after 38K miles.

If I'm wrong than BMW should use a different type of rotor. I've changed many brake pads and rotors, and it's generally not until the rotors have around 80K miles that one would expect that thet would need replacement. Of course if a car is tracked, then you may need to have the rotors replaced much sooner.
