I just bought a brand new 330xi. It has less than 100 miles. I want to drive down to Maryland to visit my brother next week. It is a 220 mile drive. My question is this: is it a bad idea to drive my car back and forth this distance during break-in?

Congratulations on your new ride. As long as you stay within the posted speed limits and keep the engine revs under 4000 or so, you should be fine. Try to vary your speed as much as possible to give the drivetrain a good workout. I drove mine to NH with about 500 miles on it with no problems.

Not a problem! As mscoins said, stay under 4000 RPM for the first 1500 miles or so, and keep the engine RPM varying on a regular basis. It's not that you must constantly change RPM, just don't cruise at one speed for more than a few minutes. That also means that cruise control is a no-no. Vary it between 55 and 70 mph. The only issue you will have is ticking off the people that are following you!

The best part is that you can more quickly get past the breakin period by taking it on the trip.

I agree with the above posts. I would also like to add that highway miles are a great way to break-in the car....they really give the car a good "exercise", no joke.

My first time on the highway, the car only had less than 100 miles on it. That day I think we drove about 600-650 miles... everyone already posted good info.... don't worry and don't use the cruise!

congrats on the ride!

yup one point i wish i knew about before going on the highway to get my break-in miles:

VARY THE RPM!! and DON'T USE THE CRUISE!!

k, i hate caps, but that had to be said. oh yea, and if you have auto, don't use the kick down feature, but you'd be flooring it to even get to that feat, so you prolly won't have to worry about that. oh yea, congrats!!! (the most imp point [:D]
