camshaft position sensor

I have a 2000 323CI 180k miles. Thanks to everyone on this thread for their assistance on other issues I had. Im getting pretty good at working on this car. I had several trouble codes that I have fix but down to one. Camshaft position sensor. I see it on top of engine but it is behind a small silver cannister shape device. What is that? Has anyone changed their sensors themselves?

if there is a wire on it it is your vanos selonoid it will have to be removed to do the inlet cam sensor it should be on the drivers side of the engine

There is a wire going to the solenoid. The sensor screw is behind the solenoid itself. So I need to remove the solenoid. How or can I do that?
